Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to return from a journey, he would recite these words: We are those who repent, those who worship, those who praise our Lord. And when he entered upon his family, he would recite these words: We are repenting, repenting, returning only to our Lord; He will not leave any of our sins.

Hazrat Bara’ narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would return from a journey, he would recite these words: We are returning, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that whenever the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from any military expedition, or from any detachment, or from Hajj or Umrah, the narrator says, whenever he reached a mountain pass or a plain, he would say Takbeer three times, then recite these words: There is no deity except Allah, He is alone, He fulfilled His promise, we are those who return, those who repent, those who worship, those who praise our Lord.

The previous statement from Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) has also been narrated through this chain of transmission.

Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey. Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed through a forest or rocky terrain, he would recite these words: "We are returning, repenting, worshipping, and, if Allah wills, praising our Lord."

Ibrahim Taimi says that when the Companions would return from a journey, they would recite these words: "We are returning, if Allah wills, repenting, praising our Lord."
