Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Bara’ narrates that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would lie down on his bed, he would recite this supplication: O Allah! I have submitted my soul to You, and I have turned my face towards You, and I have entrusted my affairs to You, and I have leaned my back towards You, desiring You and fearing You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed, and in Your Prophet, or Your Messenger, whom You have sent.

Hazrat Bara’ narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to a man: O so-and-so! When you lie down on your bed, say these words: “O Allah! I have submitted my soul to You, and I have turned my back towards You.” Then he mentioned the same content as before, but also said: So if you die that night, your death will be upon the natural disposition (fitrah), and if you reach the morning, then you will attain goodness.

Hazrat Bara bin Azib narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to a man: When you lie down on your bed, say these words: O Allah! I have submitted my soul to You, and I have turned my face towards You, and I have entrusted my affairs to You, and I have turned my back towards You, desiring You and fearing You, and there is no refuge and no escape from You except towards You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed, and I believe in Your Prophet whom You have sent. Then if you die that night, you will die upon the natural faith.

Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would lie down on his bed, he would recite this supplication: O Allah! In Your name I die and I live. And when he would wake up from sleep, he would recite this supplication: All praise is for Allah who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.

Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate at the time of sleeping: "With Your name I live and I die." And when he would wake up, he used to supplicate: "All praise is for Allah who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection."

This statement of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has also been narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) with this chain of transmission. And there is doubt in the chain regarding Hazrat Jarir, whether it is about Abdul Malik or Mansur.

Hazrat Saib narrates that I was sitting with Hazrat Ammar when a man came to him. He said: Shall I not teach you a few words? It was as if he attributed these words to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): When you lie down on your bed at night, say these words: O Allah! I have submitted myself to You, and I have turned my face towards You, and I have entrusted my affairs to You, and I have turned my back towards You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed, and in Your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) whom You have sent. O Allah! You alone have created my soul, for You alone is its life and for You alone is its death. So if You cause it to die, then have mercy on it, and if You postpone its death, then protect it while keeping faith in it.

Hazrat Bara’ narrates that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would wake up, he would supplicate: All praise is for Allah who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection. Hazrat Shu’bah says: He said this or something similar to this. And when he would go to sleep, he would supplicate: O Allah! In Your name I live and in Your name I die.

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate: O Allah! Grant us goodness in this world, and grant us goodness in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Hellfire.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any one of you intends to lie down on his bed, he should remove his extra clothes, then thoroughly shake his bed, because he does not know what was on it after him. Then he should lie down on his right side. Then he should recite this supplication: O my Lord, with Your name I lay down my side, and with Your name I rise it up. So if You take my soul, then have mercy on it, and if You release it, then protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.

Hazrat Naufal narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "What has brought you here?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Please teach me a supplication that I may recite when I go to sleep." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you lie down on your bed, recite Surah Al-Kafiroon: 'Say: O disbelievers!' Then, after finishing it, go to sleep, for it is a declaration of freedom from shirk (associating partners with Allah)."

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to an Ansari companion: "When you intend to sleep, how do you supplicate?" That companion replied: "I supplicate like this: With Your name alone I lay down my side, so forgive me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have been forgiven."

Hazrat Nofal Al-Ashja'i narrates that I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Tell me something that I may recite in the morning and evening. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Recite Surah Al-Kafiroon! Say: O disbelievers! Then, at its conclusion, go to sleep. Thus, this is a declaration of being free from shirk.

Hazrat Abdullah ibn Babah narrates that Hazrat Abu Hurairah said: Whoever recites this supplication when lying on his bed—There is no deity except Allah, who is alone, He has no partner, His is the dominion and for Him is all praise, and He is powerful over everything. Allah is pure and with all His praises, all praise is for Allah alone, there is no deity except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest—then Allah Almighty forgives all the sins of that person, even if they are as much as the foam of the sea.

Hazrat Affaq narrates that Hazrat Amr bin Maymoon said: Whoever lies on his bed and recites this supplication four times: I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, His is the dominion, and to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over all things. Then all his sins are forgiven, even if his sins fill the earth.

Hazrat Hafsa narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would recite this supplication while lying on the bed: My Lord! Save me from Your punishment on the day You will resurrect Your servants.

Hazrat Asim narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When you lie down on your bed, recite these words: In the name of Allah, and I am upon the path of Allah, and upon the way of Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).

Hazrat Bara’ narrates that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to sleep, he would place his right hand under his cheek as a pillow and would supplicate: Save me from Your punishment on the Day You will raise Your servants.

Hazrat Abu Ubaidah's father narrates that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to sleep, he would recite this supplication: O Allah! Save me from Your punishment on the day when You will raise Your servants. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would place his right hand under his cheek.

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would lie down on his bed, he would recite this supplication: O Allah! Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earths, and our Lord and Lord of everything, Creator of the grain and the date-stone, Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur'an, I seek refuge in You from the evil of every possessor of evil whose forelock You have seized. You are the First; there was nothing before You. And You are the Last; there will be nothing after You. And You are the Most High; there is nothing above You. And You are the Most Near; there is nothing nearer than You. Remove debt from me and enrich me from poverty.

Hazrat Abu Ma’shar narrates that it has been conveyed to me that when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would lie down on his bed, he used to supplicate: O Allah! Grant me well-being in my religion, and grant me well-being in my body, and grant me well-being in my sight, and make me deserving of it. There is no deity except Allah, Who is Most High, Most Great, the Owner of the seven heavens and the Owner of the Noble Throne. All praise is for Allah.

Hazrat Ubaid bin Amr al-Kharafi narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I do not consider anyone intelligent who has entered Islam until he recites Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would lie down on his bed, he would recite the Mu'awwidhatayn, blow on his hands, and then pass his hands over his entire body.

Hazrat Abu Maisarah narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to recite this supplication when going to sleep: (O Allah) I seek refuge in Your generous Being and in Your complete words from the evil of everything whose forelock is in Your grasp. O Allah! You are the One who grants deliverance from sins and debts. O Allah! Your promise cannot be broken, and Your army cannot be defeated, and no one of status can benefit from their status in Your presence. You are free from all defects and You are praised with Your praise.
