Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq said to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah, tell me something that I may say in the morning and evening. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Say: O Allah! Knower of the unseen and the seen, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Owner and Sovereign of everything! I bear witness that there is no deity except You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own self, from the evil of Satan and his helpers. Recite this supplication in the morning, in the evening, and when you lie down on your bed.

Hazrat Uthman narrates that indeed I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: Whoever recites this supplication three times in the morning and evening: "I begin with the name of Allah, with whose name nothing in the heavens or the earth can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing," then nothing will harm that person during that day and night.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when evening would fall, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would supplicate: "We have entered the evening and the entire kingdom of Allah has entered the evening, and all praise is for Allah. There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, who is alone, He has no partner." O Allah! I ask You for the goodness of this night and the goodness that is in it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this night and the evil that is in it. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from laziness and old age, from arrogance and the trials of the world, and from the punishment of the grave." And Hazrat Hasan bin Ubaidullah narrates: that Hazrat Zubaid has also transmitted with a marfu’ chain the addition of these words: "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, who is alone, He has no partner, His is the kingdom and for Him is all praise, and He has power over all things."

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abzi narrates that when the morning would come, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would supplicate: We have entered the morning upon the nature of Islam, and upon the word filled with sincerity, and upon the religion of our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and upon the pure faith of our father Ibrahim, and he was not among the polytheists.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abi Awfa narrates that when morning would come, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate as follows: "We have entered the morning and so has the kingdom of Allah, and the greatness and majesty of Allah, and the creation and the affair, and the day and the night, and whatever is in them, all belong to Allah, the One who has no partner. O Allah! Make the beginning of this day right, and make its middle successful. I ask You for the goodness of this world, O Most Merciful of those who show mercy."

Hazrat Jubair bin Abi Sulaiman narrates that I was sitting with Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) when he said: I used to hear that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite this supplication morning and evening, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not abandon this supplication until he left this world, or he said: until he passed away: O Allah! I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah! I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah! Conceal my faults and grant me security from my fears. O Allah! Protect me from in front of me, from behind me, from my right, from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your greatness from being destroyed from beneath me. Hazrat Jubair says: This means being swallowed by the earth, and I do not know whether this is what the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant or what Jubair meant.

The statement of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as mentioned previously is also transmitted with this chain of narration from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).

Hazrat Muhammad bin Munkadir narrates: It has been conveyed to me that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would enter the morning, he would say: O Allah! With Your name we enter the morning, and with Your name we live, and with Your name we die, and to You is the return. And when the evening would come, he would supplicate: O Allah! With Your name we enter the evening, and with Your name we live, and with Your name we die. And to You is the final abode.

Hazrat Abu Salam, who is a servant of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is no Muslim, human, or servant who recites this supplication three times in the morning and evening: "I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion, and with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as my Prophet," except that Allah has made it a right upon Himself to please that servant on the Day of Resurrection.

Hazrat Abu Saeed Al-Khudri narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever says: I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion, and with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as my Messenger, then Paradise becomes obligatory for that person.

Hazrat Ata bin Yasar narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever says in the evening: I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion, and with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as my Messenger, indeed that person has attained the reality of faith.

Hazrat Mas’ar says that Hazrat Bukair bin Al-Akhnas said: Whoever recites this supplication three times in the morning and evening: “O Allah! I have entered the evening bearing witness,” and in the morning says: “O Allah! I have entered the morning bearing witness,” surely whatever well-being and blessing any of us has today is only from You; there is no partner with You in granting this blessing and well-being. So, all praise is for You alone. No one will be questioned about any blessing he has during that night or day except that this servant has already expressed gratitude for that blessing.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Ubaid narrates that Hazrat Ubaid bin Umair used to supplicate in the morning and evening: O Allah! I ask You at the times of attending the prayers and at the times when Your callers stand, that You forgive me and have mercy on me.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Sabrah narrates that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) used to supplicate in the morning or evening: O Allah! Make me the best and most virtuous among Your servants during the day or night, granting me a share of the goodness which You distribute, of the light by which You guide, of the mercy which You spread, of the sustenance which You expand, from the hardship which You remove, from the affliction which You lift, from the evil which You repel, and from the trial which You turn away.

Hazrat Amr bin Murrah narrates that I asked Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib: Which supplication do you people make in the morning and evening? He replied: We supplicate as follows: I seek refuge with Allah, Who is Most Generous, and with the Name of Allah, which is Most Great, and with the complete Words of Allah, from the evil of death and the evil eye, O my Master! From the evil of that which I am unaware of, and from the evil of that whose forelock You have held, and from the evil of this day, and from the evil of what comes after this day, and from the evil of this world and the Hereafter.

Hazrat Salman narrates: Whoever recites these words in the morning and in the evening: O Allah! You are my Sustainer, You have no partner, we have entered the morning and Allah’s kingdom and sovereignty have entered the morning, which has no partner, then the sins he committed between these two times are forgiven.

Hazrat Salman narrates: Whoever recites these words in the morning: O Allah! You are my Sustainer, You have no partner, then these words will become an expiation for those deeds which he committed between morning and evening.

Musa al-Juhani narrates from a certain person the statement of Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair: Whoever recites this verse three times: "Glory be to Allah when you enter the evening and when you enter the morning," when he recites this verse, he will receive the reward equal to the deeds he missed during the past night, and if he says these words during the day, he will receive the reward equal to the deeds he missed during the past day.

Hazrat Abu Ayyash Al-Zarqi narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever says these words in the morning: There is no deity except Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, His is the dominion and for Him is all praise, and He is powerful over everything—then that person will receive the reward of freeing a slave from among the descendants of Ismail, and ten good deeds will be written for him because of this action, and ten of his sins will be erased, and his ten ranks will be elevated, and that person will remain protected from Satan until the evening. And when he says these words in the evening, he will receive these benefits until the morning.

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that when the morning would come, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say these words: O Allah! With Your will we have reached the morning and with Your will we have reached the evening, and by Your will we live, and by Your command we will die, and to You is our return.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Ubaid bin Umair narrates that one of the companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Whoever recites these words ten times in the morning: There is no deity except Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, His is the dominion and His is the praise, in His hand is all good, and He is powerful over everything—then ten ranks will be raised for him, and ten of his sins will be erased, and he will be free from hypocrisy until the evening. And if he recites these words in the evening, he will receive the same reward, and will be free from hypocrisy until the morning.

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that Hazrat Ka’b said: I found written in the Torah that whoever says these words in the morning: O Allah! I seek refuge in Your name and with Your perfect words from the accursed Satan. O Allah! I seek refuge in Your name and with Your perfect words from Your punishment and from the evil of Your servants. O Allah! I ask You by Your name and with Your perfect words for every good that can be asked from You, and for every good that You grant, and for every good that You manifest, and for every good that You conceal. O Allah! I seek refuge in You, by Your name and with Your perfect words, from every evil that appears during the day. Then Satan will not come near that person, nor will anything unpleasant happen to him, and if he says these words in the evening, he will also receive these benefits, except that in the last sentence he should say: and from the evil of everything that the night has concealed.
