Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abdur Rahman narrates that when the news of the conquest of Tustar reached Hazrat Umar—Tustar is the name of a region in Basra—he asked those people: "Is there any other news from a distant place?" They said: "A Muslim man had joined the polytheists, so we captured him." He asked: "What did you do with him?" They said: "We killed him." He said: "Why did you not take him into a house and lock the door on him, and give him one chapati to eat each day, then ask him to repent three times? If he repented, then fine; otherwise, you could have killed him!" Then he said: "O Allah! I was not present, nor did I order it, nor was I pleased with it when the news reached me."

Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The apostate will be asked to repent three times; if he returns to disbelief again, he should be killed.

Hazrat Sulaiman bin Musa states that Hazrat Usman said: The apostate will be asked to repent three times.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that repentance will be sought from the apostate three times; if he repents, he will be released, and if he refuses, he will be killed.

Hazrat Mughira narrates that Ibrahim said: The apostate will be asked to repent; if he repents, he will be released, and if he refuses, he will be killed.

Hazrat Humaid bin Hilal narrates that Hazrat Mu'adh bin Jabal came to Hazrat Abu Musa while there was a Jewish man with him. He asked: What is the matter with him? He replied: This Jew accepted Islam and then became an apostate, and Hazrat Abu Musa sought his repentance for two months. Upon this, Hazrat Mu'adh said: I will not sit down until I have struck off his neck; it is the decision of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him)!

Hazrat Hayan narrates that Hazrat Ibn Shihab Zuhri said: He should be invited to accept Islam three times; if he refuses, then his neck should be struck off.

Hazrat Ibn Jurayj states that Hazrat Ata said regarding the person who adopts disbelief after accepting Islam: He will be invited to Islam, and if he refuses, then he will be killed.

Hazrat Ibn Jurayj says that Hazrat Amr bin Dinar, regarding the person who adopts disbelief after faith, said: I heard Hazrat Ubaid bin Umair saying: He will be killed.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever changes his religion, kill him.
