Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hasan Basri narrates that a woman from the place of Barq came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: Indeed, I have committed adultery, so please carry out Allah’s punishment on me! The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sent her back until she gave many testimonies against herself. Then the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to her: Go back. When she had given birth to her child, the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered her, so she purified herself and put on her shroud. Then, by the order of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, she was stoned to death. Some of her blood splashed onto Khalid bin Walid, so he spoke harshly to her. The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade him and said: Indeed, she has repented with such a repentance that if a tax collector had repented in this way, his repentance would have been accepted.

Hazrat Buraidah narrates that a woman from the tribe of Ghamid came and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I have committed adultery and indeed I wish that you purify me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent her back. When the next day came, she said: O Prophet of Allah! Why did you send me back just as you sent Ma'iz bin Malik back? By Allah! Indeed, I am pregnant! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, go until you give birth to the child. So when she gave birth to the child, she brought the child wrapped in old, torn clothes and said: I have given birth to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Go and nurse him until you wean him. When the woman weaned the child, she brought him while he was holding a piece of bread in his hand. The woman said: O Prophet of Allah! Indeed, I have weaned him and indeed he has eaten food. So the child was handed over to a man from among the Muslims. Then, by the order of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), a pit was dug up to her chest and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the people, so they stoned her. Hazrat Khalid bin Walid brought a stone and struck her head, and the blood splattered onto the face of Hazrat Khalid bin Walid. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard him speaking ill of the woman and said: Wait, O Khalid bin Walid! By Him in Whose hand is my soul, indeed she has repented such a repentance that if a tax collector had repented like this, he would have been forgiven. Then, by the order of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), her funeral prayer was offered and she was buried.

Hazrat Imran bin Husain narrates that a woman from the tribe of Juhaina came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "Indeed, the prescribed punishment has become obligatory upon me, so please establish it upon me." She was pregnant at the time. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that she be treated well until she gave birth. When she had given birth, she was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). By his command, clothes were put on her, then she was stoned, and her funeral prayer was offered. Hazrat Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Will you offer her funeral prayer even though she committed adultery?" Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Indeed, she has repented with such a repentance that if her repentance were distributed among seventy people of Madinah, it would suffice them all. Do you find anyone superior to the one who has given her life (for Allah)?"

Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that a woman from the Sharaha tribe of Hamdan was brought to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) while she was pregnant from adultery. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) gave orders regarding her, so she was imprisoned. When she delivered the child she was carrying, she was brought out on Thursday, and he gave her a hundred lashes, and on Friday she was stoned to death.

Hazrat Abu Sufyan narrates from his elders that a woman's husband had disappeared, then he returned to find his wife pregnant. So he brought the woman before Hazrat Umar, who ordered her to be stoned. Upon this, Hazrat Mu'adh said: Even though you have justification against this woman, you have no justification against the child in her womb. So Hazrat Umar said: Imprison this woman until she gives birth. The woman gave birth to a child who had two teeth. When the father saw him, he said: My son, my son. This news reached Hazrat Umar, who said: Women have become incapable of giving birth to people like Mu'adh. If it were not for Mu'adh, Umar would have perished.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abdullah narrates that a woman was brought to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Indeed, she had committed adultery, so he imprisoned her until she gave birth to the child and her postnatal bleeding stopped and she became pure.

The aforementioned statement of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is also transmitted with this chain of narration from Hazrat Abdur Rahman.

Hazrat Dhuhl bin Ka'b narrates that Hazrat Umar intended to stone to death a woman who had committed adultery and was pregnant. Hazrat Mu'adh said to him: Then you would be unjust to her. What is your opinion regarding the soul that is in her womb? What sin has it committed? For what reason would you kill two souls in place of one? So Hazrat Umar left the woman until she gave birth, then he stoned her.

Hazrat Zadhan narrates that, on the order of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), the woman was completely wrapped in a cloak.

Hazrat Masood, who is a member of the family of Abu Darda, narrates that when Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stoned Shuraha, people began to curse her. Upon this, he said, "O people! Do not curse her. Because when a person is punished with the whip, it becomes an expiation for him. The recompense for a debt is in exchange for the debt."
