Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Hanzala Sudosi narrates that I heard Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: It was ordered regarding the whip that its lower end should be cut off, then it should be placed between two stones and made thin, then it should be used for beating. I asked Hazrat Anas: In whose time was this done? He replied: In the time of Hazrat Umar bin Khattab.

Hazrat Abu Majid narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood asked for a whip and made its lower end thin until the whip became thin. He called the executioner and said, "Flog (him)."

Hazrat Zaid bin Aslam narrates that a man who had been punished was brought to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then a new, hard whip was brought. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring something less than this." So a broken and split whip, which had been softened in the middle, was brought. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, this is fine."
