Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Huzain Abu Sasan narrates that some people from among the people of Kufa rode to Hazrat Uthman and informed him about Walid bin Uqbah drinking wine. So Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke to him about this matter. Hazrat Uthman said: Go to your cousin and you establish the hadd (punishment) upon him. So Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Hasan! Stand up and lash him. He (Hasan) said: You are not fit for this act! Entrust it to someone other than yourself. He (Ali) said: Rather, you have become weak, feeble, and incapable. O Abdullah bin Ja'far, stand up. So he began to lash him, and Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was counting until they reached forty. He said: Stop, or he said: Halt. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave forty lashes, and Hazrat Abu Bakr also gave forty lashes, and Hazrat Umar completed it to eighty lashes, and all are Sunnah (established practices).

Hasan Basri says that Hazrat Umar administered eighty lashes for (the offense of) wine.

Hazrat Abu Abdur Rahman narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Some people from among the people of Syria drank wine. At that time, Yazid bin Abu Sufyan was their governor, and those people said: Allah Almighty says that there is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds regarding what they eat. Yazid bin Abu Sufyan wrote a letter to Hazrat Umar about this matter. Hazrat Umar said: Before these people cause mischief, send them to me. When they came, Hazrat Umar consulted about them. It was said to him, O Leader of the Believers! These people have lied about Allah and have spoken against the Shariah in the Shariah. Therefore, have them killed. During this, Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) remained silent. Hazrat Umar asked, O Abu al-Hasan! What do you say? Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If they repent, then give them the prescribed lashes; if they do not repent, then kill them. They have fabricated a lie against Allah. Hazrat Umar asked them, and they expressed repentance, so they were given only the prescribed lashes.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Azhar narrates that on the day of the Battle of Hunain, a drunkard was brought to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the people: "You all get up towards him." Thus, the people went towards him and struck him with their shoes.

Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gave forty lashes with shoes for drinking alcohol, and Hazrat Umar started using a whip instead of a shoe.

Hazrat Samit bin Umair narrates that a man entered (the mosque) on the day of Jumu’ah and performed four rak’ahs of prayer. Upon this, another man said to his companion: “Did you see what I saw?” He replied: “Yes.” Then both of them caught that person and said: “Indeed, this man entered the mosque and performed four rak’ahs of prayer.” You said: “No.” You said: “Indeed, this is a matter of doubt.” You asked: “What made you do this?” That person replied: “I have never drunk alcohol before today.” So you gave him eighty lashes.

Hazrat Abu Saeed narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) administered forty lashes for drinking alcohol.
