Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Mughira narrates that Ibrahim said: When a person commits theft several times, only one of his hands will be cut, and when he drinks alcohol several times, and when he slanders several times, only one punishment will be obligatory upon him.

Hazrat Amr narrates that it is reported from Hasan Basri regarding a man who was caught in the state that he had committed adultery with a woman several times or had committed adultery with several women several times. He said: There will be one punishment. And regarding a thief who was caught after having stolen several times, he gave the same ruling.

Hazrat Ash'ath narrates that Hazrat Ibn Sirin said: It was said that when a person committed many thefts and then his hand was cut off because of one man, then this would be the punishment for all those thefts.

Hazrat Hisham Dastawai narrates that Hazrat Hammad said: When a person has committed theft several times and people were not able to catch him, but later he is caught, then only one of his hands will be cut.

Hazrat Ash'ath narrates that Hazrat Ibn Sirin said: When a thief has committed many thefts, then his hand will be cut off for some of them, unless he commits theft again anew.

Hazrat Ibn Jurayj states that Hazrat Ata said: When a person commits theft and then commits theft again, and then he is caught and brought (to the authorities), only one punishment (hadd) will be applied, and the same will be the case with adultery.

Hazrat Ibn Jurayj states that Hazrat Ibn Shihab was asked about a person who had committed theft, and then testimony was given against him that he had committed theft several times before, or he himself confessed to this along with accepting his punishment—so what is the ruling regarding him? He replied: His hand will be cut off. And Hazrat Ibn Shihab also said: If a man committed adultery and then testimony was given against him or he himself confessed to this, then only one prescribed punishment (hadd) will be established upon him.
