Spending on One’s Family and Oneself
Hadith 28345
٢٨٣٤٥ - حدثنا أبو معاوية ويزيد عن مسعر (عن) (١) عبيد بن الحسن عن ابن (معقل) (٢) قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "نفقة الرجل على أهله صدقة" (٣).
Hazrat Ibn Ma'qil narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: A man's spending on his family is charity.
Hadith 28346
٢٨٣٤٦ - حدثنا أبو معاوية عن عاصم عن الشعبي قال: إن من النفقة التي تضاعف بسبعمائة ضعف نفقة الرجل على نفسه وأهل بيته.
Hazrat Asim narrates that Imam Shabi said: Indeed, the spending for which there is a reward seven hundred times over is a man spending on himself and on his family members.
Hadith 28347
٢٨٣٤٧ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال: أخبرنا شعبة عن عدي بن ثابت عن عبد اللَّه ابن يزيد عن أبي مسعود عن النبي ﷺ قال: "نفقة الرجل على أهله صدقة" (١).
Hazrat Abu Masood narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A man's spending on his family is charity.
Hadith 28348
٢٨٣٤٨ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال: أخبرنا جرير بن حازم قال: حدثنا بشار ابن أبي سيف عن الوليد بن عبد الرحمن عن عياض بن (١) غطيف قال: دخلنا على ⦗٥١٩⦘ أبي عبيدة بن الجراح فقال: سمعت رسول اللَّه ﷺ يقول: "من أنفق على أهله أو ماز أذى عن طريق (حسنة) (٢) بعشر أمثالها" (٣).
Hazrat Iyad bin Ghatif narrates that we came to Hazrat Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah, and he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Whoever spends on his family or removes something harmful from the path, then this good deed is equal to ten good deeds.
Hadith 28349
٢٨٣٤٩ - حدثنا ابن نمير قال: حدثنا هشام بن عروة عن أبيه عن أبي (مراوح) (١) عن أبي ذر قال: قلت يا رسول اللَّه أي الأعمال أفضل؟ قال: "إيمان باللَّه وجهاد في سبيله" قال: قلت أي الرقاب أفضل؟ قال: "أنفسها عند أهلها وأغلاها ثمنًا"، قلت: فإن لم أطق ذلك؟ قال: "تعين ضائعًا أو تصنع لأخرق"، قال (٢): فإن لم أستطع (ذلك) (٣)؛ قال: "فدع الناس من الشر، فإنها صدقة تصدق بها على نفسك" (٤).
Hazrat Abu Dharr Ghifari narrates that I asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Which deed is the best? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: To have faith in Allah, and to strive in His path. I asked: Which slave is the best? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The one who treats his family well and whose price is higher. I asked: What if I am not able to do that? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then help someone who is working, or treat an unwise person kindly. I said: What if I am not able to do even that? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then keep people safe from your evil, for this is a charity that you do for yourself.
Hadith 28350
٢٨٣٥٠ - حدثنا أبو أسامة عن شعبة عن سعيد بن أبي بردة عن أبيه عن جده عن النبي ﷺ قال: "على كل مسلم صدقة"، قال: قيل: أرأيت إن لم يجد؟ قال: " (يعتمل) (١) (بيديه) (٢) فينفع نفسه ويتصدق"، قال: أرأيت إن لم يستطع؟ قال: "يعين ذا الحاجة (الملهوف) (٣) "، قال: أرأيت إن لم يستطع؟ قال: "يأمر ⦗٥٢٠⦘ بالمعروف (أو الخير) (٤) "، قال: أرأيت إن لم يفعل؟ قال: "يمسك عن الشر فإنها صدقة" (٥).
Hazrat Abu Burdah's father narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Charity is obligatory upon every Muslim. The narrator says: It was asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what do you say if someone finds nothing to give in charity?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "He should work with his own hands, benefit himself, and also give in charity." Someone asked: "If he is unable to do that?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He should help someone who is oppressed and needy." Someone asked: "If he is unable to do that as well?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He should enjoin good." Someone asked: "If he is unable to do that as well?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He should refrain from evil, for verily that too is charity."
