Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Beware of greed, for greed incited those before you to sever ties of kinship, so they severed them; it incited them to miserliness, so they became miserly; and it incited them to indecency, so they committed indecency.

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Miserliness and faith cannot be combined in a Muslim man.

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Among the bad habits found in a person are excessive miserliness and terrifying cowardice.

Hazrat Jabir narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If the wealth of Bahrain comes, I will give you so much and so much wealth. The narrator says: I went to Hazrat Abu Bakr and said: Are you being stingy with me? He replied: What illness is more dangerous than miserliness? You have never asked me even once except that I intended to give it to you.

Hazrat Aswad bin Hilal narrates that a person came to Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: I fear that I may not be able to fulfill the meaning of this verse of the Holy Qur'an { وَمَنْ یُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِہِ } because I do not have the ability to spend things, rather I have the ability to withhold them. Hazrat Abdullah replied that this is miserliness, and miserliness is the worst thing.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Dharr that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: There are three people upon whom Allah, the Lord of Majesty, will be angry: the miserly person, the one who reminds others of his favors, and the arrogant person.

Hazrat Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate with this prayer: Translation; O Allah! I seek refuge in You from being miserly.

Hazrat Umar narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge from miserliness.

This statement of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is also narrated from Hazrat Umar through this chain of transmission.

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge from miserliness.

Hazrat Talha bin Ubaidullah bin Kuraiz narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Surely Allah, the Lord of Might, is Generous and loves generosity, and He loves high morals and dislikes low morals.

Hazrat Yahya bin Abi Kathir states that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) received a bowl from Hazrat Sa’d bin Ubadah, which used to go around with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he would visit his pure wives. And in his supplication, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: O Allah! Grant me wealth, for no achievement can be accomplished except with wealth.

Hazrat Urwah narrates that Hazrat Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah used to supplicate: Translation: O Allah! Grant me the ability to be grateful and bestow honor and greatness upon me, and honor and greatness are not attained except through some achievement, and there is no achievement except through wealth. O Allah! A small amount of wealth cannot benefit me, nor am I content with it.

Hazrat Urwah narrates that I found Hazrat Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah calling out from his high house: Whoever loves fat and meat should come to Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah. The narrator says: After that, I found his son calling out in the same way. And once, in my youth, I was walking on the road to Madinah when Hazrat Abdullah bin ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) passed by me, going towards his land in the wilderness. He said: O young man! Just see if anyone is calling out from Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah’s high house? I looked. I said: No. He said: You have spoken the truth.

Hazrat Urwah narrates that Hazrat Qais bin Sa'd bin Ubadah set out towards Madinah with his companions. He used to slaughter a camel daily until he reached the place of Harrar near Madinah.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin narrates that when evening would fall, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would distribute the Ashab al-Suffah among the companions. Then one companion would take one person, another companion would take two people, and another companion would take three people. He mentioned up to ten. And he said: Hazrat Sa’d bin Ubadah would take eight of them every night and feed them dinner.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was more generous than the blowing wind.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most generous of all people in terms of goodness. And his (peace and blessings be upon him) generosity would increase even more when Hazrat Jibreel (Gabriel) would meet him.
