Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Tariq bin Shihab narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him), after performing the Fajr prayer, would not allow anyone, young or old, in his house to sleep until the sun had risen.

The uncle of Hazrat Muhajir bin Shumas narrates that for three days after Fajr, I kept seeing a man sitting at a high place. I asked him, "O servant of Allah, who are you?" He said, "I am Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Yaman." I asked, "What are you doing here?" He said, "I am observing where the sun rises from."

Hazrat Mudrik bin Auf says that I passed by Hazrat Bilal while he was in Syria and sitting in the morning. I asked: O Abu Abdullah! What has made you sit here? He replied: I am waiting for the sun to rise.

Hazrat Jabir bin Samurah narrates that when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Fajr prayer, he would remain seated in his place until the sun had risen.

Hazrat Salamah says that Hazrat Dhahhak stated: I am astonished at the companions of Hazrat Abdullah! They look intently at the sun when it rises. Do they not know that the place from which the morning rises is the same place from which the sun also rises?

Hazrat Jundub bin Abdullah Bajali Qasri narrates that I sought permission from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) three times, but he did not grant permission, so I returned. Meanwhile, his messenger met me. He asked: What made you return? I replied: I thought you were sleeping. He said: I do not sleep until I see where the sun rises from. The narrator says: I related this hadith to Imam Muhammad, and he said: Many companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) have practiced this.
