Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Maisarah Nahdi narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by some people who were playing chess. He said: What are these idols upon which you are sitting so intently?!

Hazrat Bassam narrates that Hazrat Abu Ja'far considered playing chess to be disliked.

Hazrat Ibn Abi Layla narrates that Hazrat Hakam said regarding chess: The Companions considered the one who looked at it to be at the same level as one who looks at the flesh of a pig. And the one who turned its dice, they considered him to be at the same level as one who turns the flesh of a pig.
