Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Musa narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever plays chess has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).

Hazrat Buraidah narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever played chess, it is as if he dipped his hand in the flesh and blood of a pig.

This statement of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, is also transmitted through this chain from Hazrat Sulaiman bin Buraidah.

Hazrat Qatadah narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about playing with the pieces of Nard (backgammon). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, this is the gambling of the non-Arabs." The narrator says that Hazrat Qatadah considered playing with anything to be disliked, even playing with a stick.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade playing with chess pieces.

Hazrat Abu Ayyub narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The example of a person who plays with two pieces of chess but does not gamble is like that of a person who applies the fat of a pig but does not eat its meat.

Hazrat Mujahid narrates that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "For me, putting my hand in the flesh of a pig is more preferable than playing chess."

Hazrat Bard bin Muammar bin Yazid narrates that I asked Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about chess. She replied: Allah has kept chess away from goodness, and Allah Almighty has also kept its player away from goodness.

Hazrat Abu Ash'ath Nakha'i narrates that I heard Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) saying: "It is better for someone to be stained with the blood of a pig than to play chess."

Hazrat Ja'far's father narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Chaucer and chess are gambling.

Hazrat Nafi' narrates that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: When the pieces of chess were found in someone's house, that house would be demolished, and whoever played this game would be beaten.

Hazrat Mas'ar narrates from Hazrat Abdul Malik bin Umair that Hazrat Abu Al-Ahwas said: While Hazrat Sufyan narrates from Hazrat Abdul Malik bin Umair, and he from Hazrat Abu Al-Ahwas, that Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Beware of those marked dice with which you are rebuked, for this is gambling.

Hazrat Abu Musa narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever played chess has indeed disobeyed Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).

Hazrat Abu Ayyub narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whoever plays chess for gambling is like one who eats the flesh of a pig, and whoever plays it without gambling is like one who applies the fat of a pig as oil.

Hazrat Bassam says that I asked Hazrat Abu Ja'far about chess, and he declared it disliked (makruh).

Hazrat Salat al-Dahan narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I prefer to rub the leather placed under the cooking pot rather than to apply perfume made of saffron. And I prefer to turn over two burning coals rather than to turn over the pieces of chess.

Hazrat Muslim narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by some people while they were playing chess. He punished them until midday.
