Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Masruq narrates that I met Hazrat Umar bin Khattab, and he asked, "Who are you?" I replied, "I am Masruq bin Ajda’." Upon this, Hazrat Umar said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that Ajda’ is the devil."

Hazrat A'mash states that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) disliked naming (someone) 'Abd Rabba'.

Hazrat Abdul Kareem says that Hazrat Mujahid disliked the name Abdu Rabbah.

Hazrat Ibn Abi Najih states that Hazrat Mujahid said: Allah has disliked naming (someone) Malik (Owner/King).

Hazrat Samurah narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade us from giving our slaves four names: they are these names—Aflah, Nafi’, Rabah, and Yasar.

Hazrat Jabir narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If Allah wills, I will soon prohibit my ummah from keeping these names: Nafi’, Aflah, and Barakah. Hazrat A’mash says that I do not know whether the narrator mentioned the name Rafi’ or not. This is because when someone would come and ask: Is Barakah here? The people of the house would say: No.

Hazrat Abu Khulda narrates that Hazrat Abu Alia said: "You people do a very bad thing! You name your children after the prophets and then curse and scold them."
