Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Awza'i narrated from a certain Sheikh that Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit wrote a letter to Hazrat Muawiyah and began with Hazrat Muawiyah's name.

Hazrat Awza'i says that when a letter was written to Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz, it would begin with his name, and he did not consider there to be any harm in this.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin narrates that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) had some business with Hazrat Muawiyah, so he intended to write him a letter. People said: If you write the letter in his name, it would be better, and they kept insisting on this until he wrote: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, to Hazrat Muawiyah.

Yunus narrates that a man wrote a letter from Hasan to Salih bin Abdur Rahman, so he wrote: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Hasan to Salih. Then a man said: O Abu Saeed, if you had begun with his name, it would have been better, so you began with the name of that person.

Ismail Makki says that Hasan Basri and Hazrat Nakha'i, both of them, did not see any harm in a person writing a letter to someone and beginning the letter with that person's name.

Hazrat Abu Fazarah narrates that Hazrat Hakam said: There is no harm in beginning a letter with the name of the person to whom you are writing.
