Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Avoid lying, for indeed lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to Hell. And indeed, a man tells lies and adopts lying until he is written with Allah as a liar. And you must speak the truth, for indeed truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. And indeed, a man speaks the truth and adopts truthfulness until he is written with Allah as truthful.

Hazrat Marrah bin Shurahbeel narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Surely, a person speaks the truth and adopts truthfulness to such an extent that even if there is as much wickedness in his heart as the eye of a needle, this truthfulness finds its place there as well. And surely, a person tells lies and adopts falsehood to such an extent that even if there is as much goodness in his heart as the eye of a needle, this falsehood finds its place there as well.

Ibrahim, Hazrat Abu Ma'mar, and Hazrat Abu Al-Bakhtari—all these gentlemen state that Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is not permissible to lie, whether in seriousness or in jest. Then Hazrat Abdullah recited this verse: Fear Allah and be with those who are truthful.

Hazrat Hussain narrates that Hazrat Abu Bakr said: "Avoid lying, for indeed it removes faith."

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Yazid narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A believer can become accustomed to all traits except dishonesty and lying.

Hazrat Mus'ab bin Sa'd narrates that Hazrat Sa'd said: A believer can become accustomed to all traits except dishonesty and lying.

Hazrat Ismail bin Abi Khalid narrates that it was mentioned to Hazrat Amir that indeed when a hypocrite speaks, he lies. Upon this, Hazrat Amir said: I do not know what you people are saying; if he is a liar, then he is a hypocrite.

Hazrat Maymun bin Shabib narrates that Hazrat Umar said: You cannot attain the reality of faith until you give up lying even in jest.

Hazrat Aun narrates that it was mentioned in the presence of Imam Muhammad that there is no harm in lying during war. Upon this, Muhammad said: As for me, I know this much about lying that it is forbidden.

Hazrat Abu Umamah narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A believer can become accustomed to all traits except treachery and lying.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Aamir narrates that one day my mother called me while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in our house. She said, "Come here, I will give you something." Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you intend to give him?" She replied: "A date." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "If you do not give him anything, then the burden of a lie will be written against you."
