Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Huraira relates this hadith to the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Jews and Christians do not dye (their hair), so oppose them."

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir. He says that on the day of the conquest of Makkah, Hazrat Abu Quhafa was brought to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And his head was as white as the plant of Thaghama. So the Prophet said: "Take him to one of his women, so that she may change it, and keep him away from black color."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Dharr. He says that the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best things with which you change whiteness are henna and katam herb."

Hazrat Tawoos ... or Ibn Tawoos ... narrates from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that he said: A man passed by the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) who had dyed his hair with henna. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How good this is." Then another man passed by who had dyed his hair with henna and katam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is better than that." The narrator says: Then another person passed by who had dyed his hair with yellow color. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is better than all of that." ... Hazrat Tawoos used to dye his hair with yellow color.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ja'far Ansari. He says that I saw Hazrat Abu Bakr, and it was as if his head and his beard were like the embers of the tamarisk (tree).

It is narrated from Hasan that the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best thing with which you can change the whiteness (of hair) is henna and katam."

It is narrated from Hazrat Shaibani. He says that I saw Ibn al-Hanafiyyah, and his head and beard were red. He had dyed both of them with henna and katam.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ismail bin Abi Khalid. He says that I saw Hazrat Abdullah bin Abi Awfa. He had two rams and they were dyed with henna.

It is narrated from Ismail. He says that I saw Hazrat Anas dyeing his hair with henna.

It is narrated from Hazrat Yazid. He says that I asked Hazrat Abu Ja'far, "Did the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ever use dye?" Abu Ja'far said, "Certainly, he (peace and blessings be upon him) applied something of henna and katam."

It is narrated from Hazrat Usman bin Mauhib. He says that I went to the service of Hazrat Umm Salama, and she showed me a hair from the blessed hair of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, which was dyed with henna and katam.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Nabil that he said: I saw Hazrat Tawus, he had dyed (his hair) with henna.

It is narrated from Hazrat Qais bin Abi Hazim. He says that Hazrat Abu Bakr used to come to us, and his beard was like the flame of the 'arafaj' (a plant that grows in soft soil), because of applying henna and katam.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aamir. He says that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) applied dye only once.

Ismail narrates: He says that I saw Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Abdullah bin Abi Awfa; their hair dye was red.

It is narrated from Hazrat Izaar bin Harees. He says that Hazrat Hussain bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to dye his hair with henna and katam.

It is narrated from Hazrat Usman bin Hakeem. He says that I visited a few hairs of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, dyed with henna, at the house of Abu Ubaidah bin Abdullah bin Zam’ah’s family.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman bin Auf that Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Aswad bin Abd Yaghuth ... he was his companion in gatherings ... he had white hair and a white beard. So one day he came to them and he had dyed his beard red. Upon this, people said to him, "This is good." So he said, "My mother, Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), sent her slave girl to me last night and made me swear that I must certainly dye (my hair). And she also told me that Hazrat Abu Bakr also used to dye (his hair)."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ikrimah. He says that I saw Thamud. So I saw that their beards were dyed.
