Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), he says that during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to make nabidh from unripe dates and ripe dates. Then, when the prohibition of alcohol was revealed, we poured out the nabidh of both from the vessels and then we abandoned both.

Najranī narrated, he said: I asked Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), "We are people of dates and raisins. Is it permissible for us to mix dates and raisins and then make nabidh from both together?" He replied, "No." I asked, "Why?" He replied, "A man was in a state of intoxication during the blessed time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and was brought to the gathering of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in that state. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then ordered him to be beaten, Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him about the drink. He said, 'I drank nabidh.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, 'Which nabidh?' He replied, 'Nabidh of dates and raisins.' The narrator said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Do not mix the two together, for each one of them is sufficient on its own.'"

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abu Qatadah narrates from his father, who narrates from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: "Do not use dates and raisins together to make nabidh, and do not make nabidh by combining unripe and ripe dates together; rather, make nabidh from each of them separately."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed, he says that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade (the mixing of) unripe dates and ripe dates, and raisins and dates.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade mixing dates and raisins together, and mixing unripe and ripe dates together. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote a letter to the people of Jurash in which he forbade them from mixing dates and raisins together.

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir, who says that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade mixing dates and raisins, and also forbade mixing ripe and unripe dates.

It is narrated from Hazrat Uqbah bin Abd al-Ghaafir that he says Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri used to prohibit mixing dates and raisins.

Hazrat Ikrimah narrates regarding Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that he disliked eating half-ripe dates alone. He also disliked that half-ripe and fully ripe dates be combined together. However, he saw no harm in combining raisins and dates, and he used to say, "Both of these are lawful things, whether they are together or separate." The narrator says that Hasan disliked combining dates and raisins.

It is narrated from Hazrat Samak bin Musa Dhabbi, he says that I saw the slave girl of Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) breaking ripe dates from the stem side among the half-ripe dates. So this slave girl used to prepare nabidh separately from the ripe dates taken from the stem side, and used to prepare nabidh separately from the half-ripe dates.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Mus'ab Madani, who says that he heard Hazrat Abu Hurairah say: When the command regarding the prohibition of wine was revealed, people would take semi-ripe dates and cut off the tail of the Harmadhannab (dates with tails), then they would take the semi-ripe date, split it in the middle, put it in water, and then drink it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir, he says that the (nabidh) of ripe and unripe dates is khamr (intoxicant).

It is narrated from Hazrat Mujahid, he says that a man asked Hazrat Umar about Fadheeh. So he asked, what is Fadheeh? The man replied, half-ripe dates are split and mixed with ripe dates. Then he said, this is Fadhooh. You said: Wine has been made unlawful. There is no other wine besides this.

Hazrat Abu Zubair narrates about Hazrat Jabir, he says that he disliked mixing ripe and unripe dates, and mixing raisins with dates.

It is narrated from Hazrat Yazid bin Kaisan, he says: I asked Abu al-Sha’tha Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid about Fadheekh. So he asked: What is Fadheekh? I explained, ripe and half-ripe dates. Upon this he said: By God! If you take plain water and boil it, then put it in your stomach, it is better than gathering ripe and half-ripe dates together in your stomach.

It is narrated from Hazrat Thabit bin Ubaid, he says that Hazrat Abu Masood Ansari used to instruct his family members to separate the semi-ripe dates from the fully ripe (tail-end) dates, and then they would make a separate nabidh (date drink) from each type of date.

Hazrat Abu Abdullah Jusri narrates about Hazrat Ma'qil bin Yasar that he asked Hazrat Ma'qil about wine. So he replied, we used to be in Madinah and it was a region abundant in dates. But the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, made Fadheekh forbidden for us. The narrator says that a person came to him and asked him about his mother, that his mother had reached such an age that she could not eat food, so could the questioner give his mother Nabidh to drink? The narrator says, I asked him, O Ma'qil bin Yasar! What ruling did you give him about this? He said, I instructed him not to give his mother Nabidh to drink.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed, he says that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade mixing dates and raisins, and forbade mixing ripe and half-ripe dates.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), he says that we were in the house of Hazrat Abu Talha and with us were Hazrat Suhail bin Baida, Hazrat Ubayy bin Ka'b, and Hazrat Abu Ubaidah, and these people were drinking wine when suddenly a caller announced: "Beware! Wine has been declared forbidden." By Allah! These gentlemen did not even check whether this news was true or false, until they said, "O Anas! Whatever wine remains in the vessels, pour it out." So we poured out the remaining wine, and on that day the wine was made from ripe and semi-ripe dates. By Allah! After that, these people never turned towards it again until their death.

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do not mix unripe and ripe dates together, nor mix raisins and dates together; make nabidh from each of them separately."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila, he says that when a man (who drank a mixed beverage) would pass by the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while the companions were present in large numbers, they would curse him and say, "This person drinks khaleetein, that is, he mixes raisins and dates and drinks them."
