Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hasan says that when you give by counting, then take by counting; and if you give by weighing, then take by weighing.

Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, disliked that someone would give a loan by number and collect it by weight.

Hazrat Bazam says that I saw Iyas bin Muawiyah, who was the governor of Sakr Bathaq, taking gold ingots and other items as a loan by weight, and returning them by weight.

Hasan and Muhammad were asked: A person borrowed dirhams by counting them from another in exchange for land; can he repay the loan by weight? Both of you disliked this and said that he should repay the loan with the same kind.

It is narrated from Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib that a person owed another a thousand large bricks as debt. Large bricks are available at the rate of two hundred for one dirham, whereas small bricks are available at the rate of two hundred and fifty for one dirham. Thus, if he wishes, he can make it permissible for him.

Hazrat Ata says that (payment and return) of weight should be with weight, and of number should be with number.
