Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Yunus, may Allah have mercy on him, that people used to think that Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, had said regarding the person who freed some of his slaves during his terminal illness, that as much as he has freed, that much will be considered freed, and for the remaining portion, the slave will be made to strive for its price.

Hazrat Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) says regarding the person who freed his one-third slave during his terminal illness: He said, it will be executed within one-third of the wealth, and if he had also made a bequest for it among other bequests, then the value will be sought from the slave.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said that if a person frees some of his slaves during his terminal illness, then the entire slave will be considered free. If the value of the slave exceeds one third of the wealth, then for the amount exceeding one third, the slave will strive to pay it.

Hazrat Hisham, may Allah have mercy on him, was asked that a person, during his terminal illness, freed some shares of his slave. So he narrated from Hazrat Hafs bin Sulaiman that Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, says: He will be freed from one-third of the wealth.
