Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding the person who gives his slave on hire for a year, then during the year intends to sell that slave, he said: If he wishes, he can sell him.

Hazrat Iyas bin Mu'awiyah says regarding the person who sends his slave to another person so that he may teach him, then before the condition is fulfilled he takes him away from there, then whatever the teacher has spent on this slave shall be returned to him.

A person asked Hazrat Hakam that a man has given his slave on hire for a year, then he intends to take him back from the hirer, so what is the ruling on this? He (may Allah have mercy on him) replied that he is not permitted to take him back (to take him from the hirer). Then I asked Hazrat Hammad about this matter. He (may Allah have mercy on him) replied that he should not take him back except to avoid loss.

Hazrat Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) and Hazrat Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) say that if a person gives his slave on rent for a year, or for a month, or for some period, then if he intends to take the slave back from him, he can take him back.
