Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the verse of the Holy Qur'an { وَآتُوہُمْ مِنْ مَالِ اللہِ الَّذِی آتَاکُمْ } means: leave a quarter in the first installment.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that if a slave who has entered into a contract of manumission fears that he will be unable to pay the last installment and, due to this fear, takes on another contract in place of the original, then doing so is disliked.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) disliked that when a mukatab writes the contract of kitabah, it should be written in it that "I will reduce your last installment."

Hazrat Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) says that when a mukatab pays a quarter of his total kitabah amount, he should be hastened towards being freed by his owner.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) made his slave, whose kunyah was Abu Umayyah, a mukatab. When he came with the installment of the contract of manumission, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: O Abu Umayyah! Seek help in paying your contract of manumission. He replied: O Commander of the Faithful (may Allah be pleased with you)! If you allow me to wait until the last installment (it would be better). Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I fear that you may not be able to pay it. Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) recited the verse of the Holy Qur’an { وَآتُوہُمْ مِنْ مَالِ اللہِ الَّذِی آتَاکُمْ }. Hazrat Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that this was the first installment of a contract of manumission that was paid in Islam.

It is narrated from Hazrat Muhammad bin Sirin that the noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) liked that in exchange for the contract of a mukatab, some portion should be left out.

Hazrat Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) says regarding the verse of the Holy Qur'an { وَآتُوہُمْ مِنْ مَالِ اللہِ الَّذِی آتَاکُمْ } that what Allah the Exalted has taken out for you from your mukatabs (that is meant).

Hazrat Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) says that leave as much as your heart desires; there is no specific amount prescribed in this.

Hazrat Mujahid and Hazrat Qasim (may Allah have mercy on them) say that it will be reduced somewhat.

Hazrat Mujahid, regarding the verse of the Holy Qur'an { وَآتُوہُمْ مِنْ مَالِ اللہِ الَّذِی آتَاکُمْ }, says that what is in your hand (that is meant).

Hazrat Abu Abdur Rahman made a slave a mukatab and gave him a quarter as a gift, and said that this is the saying of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and recited the verse of the Holy Qur'an { وَآتُوہُمْ مِنْ مَالِ اللہِ الَّذِی آتَاکُمْ }.
