Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ibn Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the interpretation of the verse of the Holy Qur'an { وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ یَشْتَرِی لَہْوَ الْحَدِیثِ }. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It means singing. By Him besides whom there is no deity."

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) states that what is meant by this is singing, playing music, and purchasing musical instruments.

Hazrat Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) says that by the verse of the Holy Qur'an { وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ یَشْتَرِی لَہْوَ الْحَدِیثِ }, what is meant is singing, playing music, and listening to songs.

Hazrat Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that singing is meant.

Hazrat Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that singing is meant.

Hazrat Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) says that singing is meant.

Hazrat Habib (may Allah have mercy on him) says that singing is meant.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) says that by this is meant singing (music) and other similar things.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) says that singing and playing (or listening to) music creates hypocrisy in the heart, and Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) says that by the verse of the Holy Qur'an { وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ یَشْتَرِی لَہْوَ الْحَدِیثِ }, what is meant is singing (music).
