Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) that Hazrat Uqbah bin Amr Abu Mas'ud (may Allah have mercy on him) went to his house where a gift was present. He (may Allah have mercy on him) inquired, "What is this?" The people replied, "It is a gift from the one for whom you had interceded." He (may Allah have mercy on him) said, "Take it out of the house. Do you want to give me the reward for my intercession quickly in this world?"

Hazrat Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) about bribery. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If a person asks another person for some need and he decides it for him, and then he gives him a gift, then he should accept the gift.

Hazrat Kulayb bin Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I said to Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them): A villager came to me who owed a lot of tax. He requested me to intercede with the official on his behalf. I did not intercede for him in order to receive any gift or benefit from him, but only so that the official would trust the villager and fulfill his needs. Shortly after, he came to me with my letter, said "Jazak Allahu Khairan," seated me on a mount, gave me dirhams, and clothed me. Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: What do you think—if you had not interceded for him, would he have given you this? I replied, No. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then this is not right or proper for you.

It is narrated from Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) that one of the chiefs of the villages of Kufa came to the service of Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him). He was seeking help (some recommendation) from Abdullah bin Ja'far against Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) recommended him to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), so Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) fulfilled his need. The chief sent forty thousand dirhams as a gift to Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him), along with some other things—I do not know what they were. When all these things were placed before Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him), he asked, "What is this?" The people said, "The chief for whom you recommended to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) has sent this for you." He (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Send it back to him. We, the Ahl al-Bayt, do not sell goodness."
