Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Ibrahim says that if a man frees a part of his slave, whether he owned a part or the whole, the slave will become completely free.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates that if a man says to his slave woman, "Your private part is free," then she will become free; similarly, if he frees any one part of her body, then she will become completely free.

Hazrat Khalid bin Salamah says that a man came to Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) while Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was at Arafah. The man said that he had freed one third of his slave. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the entire slave has been freed; there is no partner with Allah.

Hazrat Aamir says that when someone frees a part of his slave, then the entire slave will become free.

Hazrat Sha'bi says that if a man frees one third of his slave, he should strive for the freedom of the remaining two thirds; he will not be responsible for the one third.

Hazrat Abu Mulaeeh narrates that a man freed one-third share of his slave. This matter was presented before the Prophet ﷺ, so he said: "He is entirely free; there is no partner with Allah."

Hazrat Sha’bah says that I asked Hazrat Hakam, if a person says to his slave, “Half of you is free,” what is the ruling? He replied that the predecessors used to say that guarantee is a right, so he will become free. Hazrat Hakam’s opinion was that he should set him free. The narrator says that I asked Hazrat Hammad about this matter, so he said that he should free half of him, and for the rest, he will strive.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that a man can free as many shares of his slave as he wishes.

Hasan says that when a man frees his slave, whether a little or a lot, the entire slave will become free, and when he divorces his wife by one finger or more, she will be divorced.
