Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ya'la (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Murrah narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to a man, "Give me your camel as a gift." He replied, "O Messenger of Allah! This camel is yours." The Prophet marked the camel as charity and sent it away.

Hazrat Tawus says that there is no harm in marking behind the ear.

Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib says that there is no harm in marking the ear.

Muhammad bin Ziyad narrates that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) passed by my father while he was branding an animal with the mark of Qudamah bin Maz'un. Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Do not brand so forcefully that it reaches the flesh. Do not brand so forcefully that it reaches the flesh.

Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) marking his goats at the place of Marbad.

Sulaiman narrates that I asked Hazrat Sha'bi about marking the ears of goats, and he declared it permissible.
