Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Razeen narrates that a man brought a rabbit to the Prophet ﷺ. He said, "I shot a rabbit with an arrow, but I could not find it until night fell. In the morning, I found the rabbit and my arrow was in it. What is the ruling regarding this?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Did you kill it at that time, or did it die later due to some other cause?" He replied, "No, it died later." The Prophet ﷺ said, "The night is a great creation of Allah; no one knows its reality except its Creator. Perhaps something else killed the rabbit, so throw it away."

It is narrated similarly through another chain of transmission.

Zaid bin Wahb narrates that a man came to Hazrat Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "I shoot an animal with an arrow and it disappears from me. The next day I find it and my arrow is in it. What is the ruling for me?" Hazrat Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "If this happened to me, I would eat it."

An Abyssinian slave asked Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that if I shoot an arrow at an animal and I kill it with my arrow, or after being struck by the arrow it dies due to some other reason, what is the ruling? Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) replied that if it is killed by your arrow, then eat it, and if it dies afterwards, then do not eat it.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that if a person shoots an arrow at game and finds his arrow in it the next day, he should not eat it.

Hazrat Aamir says that if a person shoots an arrow at game and it disappears, then if he does not find it in water, fallen from a mountain, or trampled by a beast, he may eat it.

Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid says that if you find your arrow in the hunt the next day, then there is no harm in eating it.

Hazrat Mak’hool used to say that if the game disappears from you at night and the next day you see your arrow in it and recognize it, then do not eat it.

Hasan says that when you shoot an arrow at game and it disappears from you and dies, and you find your arrow in it, then do not eat it.

Hazrat Habib bin Abi Amrah narrates that a man asked Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair: If I shoot an arrow at game and it disappears from me, and then I find it later, what is the ruling? Hazrat Saeed (may Allah have mercy on him) replied: If there is only the mark of your arrow on it, then eat it, and if there is anything else besides that, then do not eat it.

Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "O Messenger of Allah! One of us shoots an arrow at game, and searches for it for two or three days. He finds the game dead, with the arrow embedded in it. What is the ruling on eating it?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "If he wishes, he may eat it."

Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about shooting an arrow at game and finding it the next day—what is the ruling? He replied: If your arrow is lodged in it and no predatory animal has eaten from it, then you may eat it.
