Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I asked: O Messenger of Allah! We are people who hunt; what is lawful for us and what is unlawful? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Whatever hunting animals you train from the knowledge Allah has given you, eat what they hunt for you, provided that you have taken the name of Allah when sending them. I asked: Even if it kills the animal? He replied: Yes, even if it kills it. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If other dogs join your dog, then you cannot use that hunted animal until you know that your dog hunted it.

Hazrat Jameel bin Zaid, may Allah have mercy on him, says that I asked Hazrat Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, about hunting with dogs. He replied, "Have they been trained for hunting?" I said, "Yes! And I walk behind them." He asked, "Do all the dogs walk ahead of you?" I said, "No, some also come behind me." Hazrat Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, said, "When you see any game and you release your dog upon it and take the name of Allah, then whatever game it catches, eat it. However, if a dog that comes behind you also catches the game, do not include it with them. If you find the game alive, then slaughter it; but if you did not release the dog, rather it hunted and killed it on its own, then it is forbidden."

Usamah bin Zaid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I asked Hazrat Qasim (may Allah have mercy on him) that if a person sends his trained dog for hunting and it catches and kills the prey, but this person sees some other trained dogs with his dog, then what is the ruling? Hazrat Qasim replied that if it is known that the trained dog killed it, then he may eat it, and if he is unsure whether another dog killed it along with his dog, then he should not eat it.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said that if an untrained dog joins a trained dog in hunting, it spoils the game.
