Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Muammar says that once Mak'hool faced the Qiblah and swore ten times, then said that Jihad is obligatory upon you. After that, he said that if you wish, I can swear even more than this.

Hazrat Dawood, may Allah have mercy on him, says that I said to Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib, may Allah have mercy on him, that I know jihad is obligatory upon all people. Upon hearing this, he remained silent. I knew that if he disagreed with my statement, he would surely express it. I then said again to Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib, may Allah have mercy on him, that I have made preparations for jihad and I am about to set out for jihad. He said, "I will fulfill your responsibilities."

Hazrat Abdullah bin Mubarak (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Hazrat Ata whether jihad is obligatory. He and Hazrat Amr bin Dinar replied that we do not know.

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the foundation of faith is four things: Prayer, Zakat, Jihad, and Amānah.

Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that Islam has eight parts: prayer is one part, zakat is one part, jihad is one part, Hajj is one part, fasting in Ramadan is one part, enjoining good is one part, forbidding evil is one part. That person is deprived/failed who does not possess any part.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that if any of you is afflicted with cowardice, then he should never participate in jihad.

Hazrat Yazid bin Bishr Suksaki, may Allah have mercy on him, says that when I came to Madinah, I went to the service of Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both. At that time, an Iraqi man came to him and said, "O Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both! What is the matter that you perform Hajj and Umrah but have stopped striving in the path of Allah (jihad)?" Hazrat Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, replied, "May you perish! The foundation of faith is five things: that you worship Allah, establish prayer, pay zakat, perform Hajj, and fast in Ramadan." The man said, "Will you tell me these things again?" Hazrat Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "O servant of Allah! Worship Allah, establish prayer, pay zakat, perform Hajj, and fast in Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, told us just like this. After these, jihad is a good deed."

Hazrat Nafi' states that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) used to send his sons for jihad and would provided them with mounts. Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) was of the opinion that after prayer, the most virtuous deed is striving in the path of Allah.

Hazrat Umayyah Shami narrates that Hazrat Makhool and Hazrat Raja bin Haywah used to stay at the rear part of the army and would not separate from it.

Hazrat Sha'bi says that the one who prevails in the path of Allah is superior to a martyr.
