Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) arranged for the milk of a child whose father had passed away and who had no wealth left, to be provided by his paternal cousins.

Hazrat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him), in the commentary of the verse { وَعَلَی الْوَارِثِ مِثْلُ ذَلِکَ } of the Holy Qur'an, states that the provision of milk for the child is the responsibility of the man, not the woman.

Hazrat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked that the mother of this child is wealthy while the uncle is poor; upon whom will the responsibility of arranging milk fall? He replied that the maintenance is obligatory upon the uncle.

Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when both the mother and the paternal uncle are present, the mother's responsibility will be according to her share of inheritance and the uncle's responsibility will be according to his share of inheritance.
