Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a woman came to the Prophet ﷺ with a complaint about her husband. He asked, "Have you returned to him what you had taken from him?" She replied, "Yes, I have given back even more." He said, "You are not allowed to give more (than what you took)."

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that it is not permissible to take more compensation than the dowry (mahr) when granting khula to a woman.

It is narrated similarly through another chain.

Hazrat Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) says that it is not permissible to take more compensation than the dowry (mahr) when granting khula to a woman.

Hazrat Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that it is not permissible to take more compensation than the dowry (mahr) when granting khula to a woman; if more is taken, it must be returned.

Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said that it is not permissible to take more compensation than the dowry when granting khul‘ to a woman.

Hazrat Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) and Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) say that it is not permissible to take more compensation than the dowry when granting khula to a woman.

Hazrat Zuhri, Hazrat Ata, and Hazrat Amr bin Shu'aib (s) state that it is not permissible to take more compensation than the dowry when granting khula to a woman.

Hazrat Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that it is not permissible to take compensation more than the dowry (mahr) when granting khula' to a woman.

Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) says that it is not permissible to take more compensation than the dowry (mahr) when granting khula to a woman.

Hazrat Sha’bah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Hazrat Hakam (may Allah have mercy on him) and Hazrat Hammad (may Allah have mercy on him) about this matter, so both of them said that it is not permissible to take more compensation for khul‘ than the mahr.

Hazrat Maymoon (may Allah have mercy on him) said that whoever took more compensation from his wife than the dowry did not let her go with kindness.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that it is not permissible to take more compensation than the dowry (mahr) when granting khula to a woman.

Hazrat Raja bin Haywah (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked what Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say regarding a woman who has obtained khula. He replied that he (Hasan) used to consider it disliked to take compensation for khula more than the amount of the dowry. Hazrat Raja (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Qabeesah bin Dhu’ayb (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Recite the following verse in which Allah Almighty says: If you fear that they both cannot keep within the limits set by Allah, then there is no blame upon either of them if the woman gives something as ransom.
