Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

A man came to Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "There was some argument between me and my wife, and I have given her divorce equal to the number of stars." He (Abdullah) asked, "Did you utter the word of divorce?" He replied, "Yes." Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Allah Almighty has explained divorce clearly; whoever benefits from it, it becomes clear for him, and whoever makes it difficult for himself, We make it difficult for him. By God! Do not put yourselves in such difficulty that we have to bear it from your side. The matter is as you say, the matter is as you say."

Hazrat Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) says that if a man, after becoming the owner of all the women in the world, says to them, "You are divorced equal to the number of stars," then all will become forbidden for him.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) was asked that a man gave his wife divorce equal to the number of stars, so what is the ruling? He replied that for him, even the tip of the star of Jauza (Gemini) is sufficient.
