Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

A man came to Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "I have divorced my wife ninety-nine times!" He asked him, "What did the people say to you?" He replied, "The people told me that my wife has become forbidden to me." Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "They want to show mercy to you; she became separated from you after three divorces, the remaining divorces are sins."

Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: If a man gives his wife a hundred divorces, what is the ruling? He replied: The woman will become forbidden (haram) with three divorces, and the remaining ninety-seven divorces are sins.

A man came to Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "I have given my wife a hundred divorces. What is the ruling now?" He replied, "She became separated (bainah) from you after three divorces; the rest are acts of disobedience."

Hazrat Zaid bin Wahb (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that there was a man in Madinah who used to joke and jest excessively. He gave his wife a thousand divorces. His case was presented before Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said, "I was only joking." Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) struck him on the head with a whip and separated the two of them.

Hazrat Habib (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a man came to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "I have given my wife a thousand divorces, what is the ruling now?" He replied, "She became separated (bainah) from you with just three divorces, and the remaining divorces you may distribute among your other wives."

Hazrat Antarah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I was sitting with Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) when a man came to him and said, "O Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them)! I have given my wife a hundred divorces, I pronounced them in a single statement. Has she become separated from me through three divorces, even though it was in one utterance?" He replied, "She has become separated from you through three divorces, and you bear the sin of ninety-seven divorces."

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that a man came to Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) and said, "I have given my wife a thousand or a hundred divorces; what is the ruling regarding this?" He replied, "She has become separated from you with three divorces, and the rest are sins. You have made a mockery of the verses of Allah."

Hazrat Muawiyah bin Abi Tihiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, says that a man came to Hazrat Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, and said, "I have given my wife a hundred divorces. What is the ruling now?" He replied, "She has become forbidden to you due to three divorces, and the remaining ninety-seven are sins!"

Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: If a man gives his wife a hundred divorces, what is the ruling? He replied: She will become unlawful (haram) for him after three divorces, and the remaining ninety-seven are extra.

Hazrat Saeed Maqbari (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I was with Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) when a man came and said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman! I have given my wife a hundred divorces, what is the ruling?" He replied, "She has become separated from you with three divorces, and you will have to account for the remaining ninety-seven divorces on the Day of Judgment."

A man said to Hazrat Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) that he had given his wife one hundred divorces. He replied that she has become separated (bainah) from him with three divorces, and the rest are excess and sin.

A man came to Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) and said, "I have given my wife a thousand divorces." He replied, "The old woman has been separated from you."

A man came to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "I have given my wife a thousand divorces." He replied, "Three divorces have made her unlawful for you, and you may distribute the rest among your other wives."
