Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that if a man wishes to give his wife a divorce according to the Sunnah, he should give one divorce in each period of purity, and after the last divorce, the waiting period (iddah) should be counted from the menstruation following it.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said that after the final divorce, the woman will be required to observe the waiting period of one more menstrual cycle.

Hazrat Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) considered it undesirable to divorce a woman before every menstrual period. According to him, this act increases the waiting period (‘iddah) of the woman. In this case, in his view, the ‘iddah will be counted from the first divorce if reconciliation has not taken place in between.

Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say that if a man divorces his wife, and after one month gives her a second divorce, then her waiting period (‘iddah) will be counted from the first divorce as long as he has not taken her back.

Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) says that if a man gives his wife one divorce at every menstrual period, then the waiting period (iddah) will be counted from the first divorce, if he has not taken her back.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) and Khaythamah (may Allah have mercy on him) say that whenever a woman in menstruation is divorced once, after three menstruations she will observe one more menstruation as her waiting period. Waki’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that this is also the practice of the people.

Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) and Hazrat Khallas bin Amr (may Allah have mercy on him) say that the waiting period (‘iddah) will begin after the final divorce. Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) says: We do not prefer this.
