Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Jarir (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the sudden glance. He replied, "Turn your gaze away."

Hazrat Alaa bin Ziyad (may Allah have mercy on him) said that it was said: Do not even cast your gaze upon the beauty of a woman's veil, for the gaze awakens desire in the heart.

Hazrat Asim Ahwal (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that once Hazrat Shabi (may Allah have mercy on him) recited the verse of the Holy Qur'an: Tell the believers to lower their gaze. I asked Hazrat Shabi (may Allah have mercy on him): A man looks at a woman but does not look at her forbidden parts, so what is the ruling? He replied: Do you want to pierce her with your eyes?

Hazrat Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) says that there is no good in the gaze which arouses desire in the heart.

Hazrat Buraidah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that if your gaze falls (on something), do not look again, because there is allowance in the first glance, but there is no allowance for you in the second.

Musa Jahni, may Allah have mercy on him, says that I was on a road with Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair, may Allah have mercy on him. A woman or a girl came before us, and all of us looked at her. Then Hazrat Saeed lowered his gaze, but I kept looking. Hazrat Saeed said to me that there is no accountability for the first glance, but there is accountability for the second.

Hazrat Qais (may Allah have mercy on him) says that there is no accountability for the first glance, but if someone keeps looking, then it is accountable.

Hazrat Abu Haitham (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a man asked Hazrat Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him): "If a woman comes before me on the road and I turn my gaze away from her, will I be sinful?" He replied: "Do you not read the Qur'an? Allah Almighty says: Tell the believers to lower their gaze, and Allah Almighty says: Allah knows the betrayal of the eyes."

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when you encounter a woman, keep your gaze lowered until she has passed by.

Hazrat Abu Qalabah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a woman's beauty will not harm you as long as you do not become familiar with her.

Hazrat Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that during Tawaf, my gaze fell upon a woman; she seemed pleasing to me. I wanted to ask about her, but she was occupied. A woman’s beauty does not harm you until you come to know her.

Hazrat Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) says that it is not permissible for a man to look at any woman except his wife or a mahram relative.

Ayub (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) would not travel with any caravan in which there were women.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)! There is a treasure for you in Paradise and you will attain both sides of Paradise. If your gaze falls (upon something), do not cast a second glance, for there is allowance for the first glance but the second is not permitted.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), in the explanation of the verse of the Holy Qur'an: "Allah knows the deceit of the eyes and what the hearts conceal," says that sometimes a man is sitting among some people and a woman passes by there. He makes the people believe that he has lowered his gaze, but if he finds that the people are heedless of him, he starts looking at the woman, and if he fears that people might see him, he lowers his gaze. Allah Almighty is aware of the thoughts in his heart, that the man even wants to look at the hidden parts of the woman.

Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I would prefer the smell of a dead animal in my nose over the fragrance of a woman.

Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I would prefer to collide with a camel smeared with tar than to collide with a woman.

Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah have mercy on him) says that every lustful eye is an adulterous one.
