Supplication to Be Made for a Newlywed
Hadith 18099
١٨٠٩٩ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: نا حميد بن عبد الرحمن عن (السري) (١) بن يحيى عن الحسن قال: قال رجل للآخر: بالرفاء والبنين، فقال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "لا تقولوا هكذا (٢)، قولوا: بارك اللَّه فيك وبارك عليك" (٣).
Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A man gave a prayer to another on the occasion of his marriage: "Bil-rifā’i wal-banīn" (May you be happy and have children). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard this and said: Do not say this, rather say: May Allah bless you.
Hadith 18100
١٨١٠٠ - حدثنا عبد الأعلى عن يونس عن الحسن أن عقيل بن أبي طالب تزوج امرأة من بني (جشم) (١) فدعاهم فقالوا: بالرفاء والبنين، فقال: لا تقولوا ذاك، قالوا: كيف نقول يا أبا (يزيد) (٢)؟ قال: تقولون بارك اللَّه لك وبارك عليك، فإنا كنا نقول أو نؤمر بذلك (٣).
Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Aqeel bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) married a woman from Banu Jashm, and then invited people (to a feast). The people prayed for him by saying "bil-rifā’i wal-banīn" (with prosperity and sons). He said, "Do not say this." The people asked, "Then what should we say?" He replied, "You should say: May Allah bless you, because we have been commanded to say this."
