Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Ash'ath married a woman with a dowry of his own choosing. Then this case was brought before Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), so he said, "Make her pleased, make her pleased."

Hazrat Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that if a marriage takes place on the condition that the matter of mahr will be decided according to the decision of the woman or the man, and later a dispute arises, then the mahr equivalent to the customary amount will be given without any increase or decrease, and the marriage is valid.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Amr bin Harith (may Allah have mercy on him) sent a marriage proposal for the daughter of Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him). Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the dowry will be determined according to my decision. Amr bin Harith consulted his friends, and they said, "Will you make a man from Tayy the judge in your marriage matter?" Even then, Amr bin Harith entrusted him with the decision. So Hazrat Adi decided that the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) is four hundred and eighty. Amr sent him ten thousand and said, "Please arrange the departure of your daughter."

Hazrat Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Ash'ath (may Allah have mercy on him) married a woman on a dowry of her own choosing, and then asked Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about this matter, saying: "I have spent one night with her, the knowledge of which is only with Allah, fearing that she might demand from me the wealth of Qais." Hazrat Umar replied: "She will not get that; she will get the dowry equivalent to that of women of her status."

Hazrat Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) says that if a man marries a woman with a mutually agreed upon mahr, and the man passes away before the mahr is determined, then the woman will receive mahr mithl (the customary mahr).

Hazrat Abdul Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a man married a woman on the condition of giving a dowry of his choice, then he gave ten dirhams as dowry. Hazrat Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) declared it permissible and said that Muslims used to marry with less or more dowry than this.
