Explanation of the Quranic Verse: {But Do Not Make a Secret Arrangement with Them}
Hadith 17713
١٧٧١٣ - حدثنا أبو بكر عن جرير عن منصور عن الشعبي في قوله (تعالى) (١): ﴿(وَلَكِنْ) (٢) لَا تُوَاعِدُوهُنَّ سِرًّا (إِلَّا أَنْ تَقُولُوا) (٣) قَوْلًا﴾ [البقرة: ٢٣٥]، قال: لا (يأخذ) (٤) عليها عهدًا ولا ميثاقًا أن لا (تزوّج) (٥) غيره.
Hazrat Sha'bi, in the commentary of the verse { وَلٰکِنْ لَا تُوَاعِدُوْھُنَّ سِرًّا } of the Holy Qur'an, says that its meaning is that a man should not take such a pledge or promise from a woman that she will not marry anyone else.
Hadith 17714
١٧٧١٤ - حدثنا ابن عيينة عن ابن أبي نجيح عن مجاهد في قوله: ﴿(وَلَكِنْ) (١) لَا تُوَاعِدُوهُنَّ سِرًّا﴾، يخطبها في عدتها.
Hazrat Mujahid, in the commentary of the verse { وَلٰکِنْ لَا تُوَاعِدُوْھُنَّ سِرًّا } of the Holy Quran, says that during her waiting period, a marriage proposal should not be sent to her.
Hadith 17715
١٧٧١٥ - حدثنا الثقفي عن خالد عن محمد (قال) (١): ﴿(وَلَكِنْ) (٢) لَا تُوَاعِدُوهُنَّ سِرًّا (٣)﴾ قال: يلقى (الولي) (٤) (فيذكر) (٥) (رغبة) (٦) وحرصًا.
Muhammad, in the explanation of the verse { وَلٰکِنْ لَا تُوَاعِدُوْھُنَّ سِرًّا } of the Holy Qur'an, says that he should meet the guardian and express his inclination and desire.
Hadith 17716
١٧٧١٦ - حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن سلمة بن كهيل عن مسلم البطين عن (سعيد) (١) قال: لا يقاضيها بالعدة أن لا تزوج غيره.
Hazrat Saeed, in the explanation of the verse { وَلٰکِنْ لَا تُوَاعِدُوْھُنَّ سِرًّا } of the Holy Quran, says that a man should not demand from a woman that she does not marry someone else.
Hadith 17717
١٧٧١٧ - حدثنا شبابة (عن) (١) ورقاء عن ابن أبي نجيح عن مجاهد: ﴿(وَلَكِنْ) (٢) لَا تُوَاعِدُوهُنَّ سِرًّا﴾، قول الرجل للمرأة: لا تفوتيني بنفسك فإني ناكحك، هذا لا يحل.
Hazrat Mujahid, in the commentary of the verse { وَلٰکِنْ لَا تُوَاعِدُوْھُنَّ سِرًّا } of the Holy Qur'an, says that it means a man saying to a woman: "Do not deprive me of yourself, I want to marry you." Saying this is not permissible.
Hadith 17718
١٧٧١٨ - حدثنا أبو أسامة عن عمران (١) بن حدير عن أبي (مجلز) (٢) والحسن: ﴿(وَلَكِنْ) (٣) لَا تُوَاعِدُوهُنَّ سِرًّا﴾، (قالا) (٤): الزنى.
Hasan, in the explanation of the verse { وَلٰکِنْ لَا تُوَاعِدُوْھُنَّ سِرًّا } of the Holy Qur'an, says that it refers to adultery.
Hadith 17719
١٧٧١٩ - حدثنا مروان بن معاوية عن عمران عن الحسن: ﴿وَلَكِنْ (١) لَا تُوَاعِدُوهُنَّ سِرًّا﴾ قال: الزنى.
Hasan, in the explanation of the verse { وَلٰکِنْ لَا تُوَاعِدُوْھُنَّ سِرًّا } of the Holy Qur'an, says that it refers to adultery.
Hadith 17720
١٧٧٢٠ - [حدثنا وكيع عن عمران بن حدير عن الحسن قال: سمعته يقول: ﴿(وَلَكِنْ) (١) لَا تُوَاعِدُوهُنَّ سِرًّا﴾ قال: الزنى] (٢).

Hazrat Abu Majliz, in the explanation of the verse { وَلٰکِنْ لَا تُوَاعِدُوْھُنَّ سِرًّا } of the Holy Qur'an, says that it refers to adultery.
Hadith 17723
١٧٧٢٣ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: نا زيد بن الحباب عن (أبي هلال عن حيان عن الأعرج) (١) عن جابر بن زيد قال: الزنى.
Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid, in the commentary of the verse { وَلٰکِنْ لَا تُوَاعِدُوْھُنَّ سِرًّا } of the Holy Quran, states that it refers to adultery.
Hadith 17724
١٧٧٢٤ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: (نا) (١) يحيى بن يمان عن سفيان عن علقمة بن مرثد عن الضحاك قال: لا يقاضيها أن لا (تزوّج) (٢) غيره.
Hazrat Dahhak, in the commentary of the verse { وَلٰکِنْ لَا تُوَاعِدُوْھُنَّ سِرًّا } of the Holy Quran, states that it means that a man should not demand from a woman that she should not marry anyone else.
