Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

A man from the tribe of Bakr bin Wa'il asked Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that we work for wages during Hajj, and some people think that our Hajj is not valid. Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Did you not recite the Talbiyah and perform the Tawaf of the Ka'bah? We replied: Why not? He said: Then you are among those who have performed Hajj. A man came to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked the same question that you have asked me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not give him any answer until this verse was revealed: { لَیْسَ عَلَیْکُمْ جُنَاحٌ اَنْ تَبْتَغُوْا فَضْلاً مِّنْ رَّبِّکُمْ }. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called him, recited this verse to him, and then said: You are among those who have performed Hajj.

A person came to Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: I offered myself for hire (for the service of Hajj), but I left my wages because of Hajj, so has my Hajj been performed? Is it sufficient on my behalf (as Hajj)? Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: This is among those about whom Allah Almighty has said: { اُولٰٓئِکَ لَھُمْ نَصِیْبٌ مِّمَّا کَسَبُوْا وَ اللّٰہُ سَرِیْعُ الْحِسَاب }.

Hasan was asked about the laborer who worked for wages up to Makkah and then became wealthy? He replied that it will be sufficient on his behalf.

Hazrat Ata, Hazrat Tawus, and Hazrat Mujahid say regarding the trader and the laborer that it will suffice on their behalf.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) says regarding the person who offered himself for the service of pilgrims for wages, that the Hajj will be sufficient on his behalf.

Hazrat Umar bin Dharr narrates that I asked Hazrat Mujahid about the trader, the laborer, and the hired worker. He replied that there will be no deficiency or shortcoming in the Hajj of the laborer, nor in the Hajj of the trader, nor in the Hajj of the hired worker.

An Arab Bedouin asked Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair, "I have hired a camel for wages and I intend to perform Hajj; is this sufficient for me?" He replied, "No, this has no validity."

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair says that it will not be sufficient.

Hazrat Abu Salil says that I asked Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib that some people think that the Hajj of a laborer is not valid? He replied, rather his Hajj will be good and excellent if he fears Allah Almighty, fulfills the trust properly, and remains a good companion.
