Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Anas narrates that when you set out and intend to perform Hajj, do not say that I am going to perform Hajj until you have put on the Ihram. The narrator says that I asked, then what should I say? He replied, say that I am a traveler.

Hazrat Abdullah says that whoever intends to set out for Hajj should not say, "I am going to perform Hajj," because a Hajji is one who is in the state of Ihram. He should rather say, "I am a traveler, a seeker."

Ibrahim was asked: If someone intends to perform Hajj, but before entering into Ihram, it becomes apparent that he must return, what should he do? He replied: There is no harm in returning before entering into Ihram.

Hazrat Hakam states that when a person sets out from Makkah Mukarramah with the intention of Hajj and then has to return, he may return as long as he has not yet donned the Ihram for Hajj.

Hazrat Ata and Hazrat Tawus say that if he wishes, he may complete the Hajj, and if he wishes, he may return.
