Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that his mother had made a vow which she passed away before fulfilling. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Then fulfill it on her behalf.

It was asked from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) that a person passed away and he had a vow (nazr) upon him? He replied: The fast of the vow should be observed on his behalf.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates that if a person passes away and there is a vow upon him, then his guardian should fulfill it.

It is narrated from Ibrahim that a person passed away and he had a vow of fasting upon him. He says that food should be fed on his behalf.

It is narrated from Hasan that a person made a vow to fast, but died before he could observe the fast. He (Hasan) said: It is preferable that someone should fast on his behalf to make up for the missed fast.

Hazrat Tawus, regarding a vow made for a deceased person, says that a decision will be made among his heirs, and if someone has fasts of a year due upon him, then if the heirs wish, they may observe the fasts; each of the heirs will observe three months of fasting.

Hazrat Sinan bin Abdullah Al-Juhani narrates from his aunt that she presented herself before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! My mother has passed away and she had made a vow to go to the Ka'bah on foot. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Are you able to walk on her behalf? I said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then walk on behalf of your mother. I asked: Will this suffice for her? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What do you think, if she had a debt and you paid it, would that debt be accepted from you? I said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah is more deserving of having it fulfilled.

Hazrat Ibn Buraidah narrates from his father that I was sitting with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a woman came and said: My mother had two months of fasts due; will it be sufficient if I fast on her behalf? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes.
