Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Musa bin Ma’bad states that a woman from his family sat in i’tikaf in the mosque for a month. She had been sitting for twenty-nine days when she began menstruating, so she returned to her home. When she became pure, her husband had lawful relations with her. Hazrat Musa says that he went to Hazrat Salim and Hazrat Qasim, and both of them told him: First go to Hazrat Sa’id bin al-Musayyib and then come to us. I went to Hazrat Sa’id bin al-Musayyib and asked him about this matter. He said: Both of them have betrayed the limits set by Allah and acted against the Sunnah. It is obligatory upon the woman to sit in i’tikaf again (from the beginning). Hazrat Musa says that he then went back to Hazrat Salim and Hazrat Qasim and informed them of what he had been told. Both of them said: This is also our opinion.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said that if a person observing i'tikaf engages in intercourse, his i'tikaf becomes invalid and he must observe i'tikaf again.

Hazrat Mujahid says that if a person observing i'tikaf engages in intercourse, he should give two dinars in charity.

Hasan was asked about a person who is in i'tikaf and his wife falls unconscious. He replied: He is just like someone who falls unconscious in Ramadan, and the same applies to him as applies to one who falls unconscious in Ramadan.

Hazrat Ata says: He will make up (perform qada) for the missed i'tikaf.

Hazrat Dhahhak says that the companions used to have intercourse while in i'tikaf until this verse was revealed { وَ لَا تُبَاشِرُوْھُنَّ وَ اَنْتُمْ عٰکِفُوْنَ فِی الْمَسٰجِدِ } [البقرۃ ١٨٧]

Hazrat Zuhri says that whoever has intercourse with his wife while in the state of I'tikaf, the same expiation is obligatory upon him as is upon the one who has intercourse during Ramadan.

Ibrahim says that when a person observing i'tikaf has intercourse, he must begin the i'tikaf anew.

Hazrat Sha'bi was asked about a woman who made a vow to observe i'tikaf for fifty days. She had completed forty days of i'tikaf when her husband returned and sent her a message, so she went to him. He replied: She should complete the remaining days.

Hasan says that if a man is in i'tikaf and his wife falls unconscious, he said he should free a slave.
