Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Ibrahim al-Taimi says that when a person says, "By Allah, it is binding upon me," or "Hajj is obligatory upon me," both are the same. And when he says, "For Allah, I have made a vow upon myself," or "A vow is upon me," both are the same. And when he says, "I have sworn by the name of Allah," or "I swear by the name of Allah," it is the same.

Ibrahim says that it is the same whether a person says, "I swear an oath," or says, "I swear by Allah that Hajj is obligatory upon me," or "Hajj is obligatory upon me for Allah," or "I have made a vow," or "I have made a vow for Allah."

Hazrat Nafi' narrates that a person said, "I have vowed to walk to the Ka'bah." So Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "This is a vow, so he should walk on foot."

Hazrat Muhammad bin Hilal says that I heard from Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib, he said: Whoever says, "It is obligatory upon me to travel on foot towards the Ka'bah," then nothing is binding upon him until he says, "I vow to walk on foot."

Hazrat Hisham bin Urwah narrates that one of us said, "I have vowed to walk towards the Ka'bah in something." Then he came to Hazrat Qasim and asked him about it. He replied, "He will walk towards the House of Allah (Baitullah)."

Hazrat Malik bin Mughul says that I asked Hazrat Ata, "A person says: 'I have an oath for Allah.'?" He replied, "He will give its expiation."
