Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Burdah narrates from his father that when Hazrat Umar was wounded, Hazrat Suhaib began to weep, saying, "Alas, our brother!" Hazrat Umar said: "O Suhaib! Do you not know that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely, the deceased is punished because of the crying of the living?"

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Hazrat Umar was wounded, Hazrat Hafsa began to weep, so Hazrat Umar said: O daughter! Stop weeping. Do you not know that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely, the deceased is punished because of the weeping of his family over him.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Sirin narrates that it was mentioned before Hazrat Imran bin Husain that the deceased is punished because of the weeping of the living. People asked, "How is the deceased punished because of the weeping of the living?" He replied that the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, has said so.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely, the deceased is punished because of the weeping of the living.

Hazrat Umm Salamah narrates that when Hazrat Abu Salamah passed away, I said, "I am a traveler, in a foreign land; I will mourn for him in such a way that it will be described." When I intended to mourn (wail), a woman came to me from an elevated place who wanted to help me in mourning. Then the Holy Prophet turned his attention and said: "Do you both want to let Satan enter this house from which Allah the Exalted has expelled him?" He said this twice. She says, "I became silent from mourning, and then I did not mourn."

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that when the news of Hazrat Ja'far's death arrived, I saw signs of grief on the blessed face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). A person came and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! The women are weeping. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Go to them and make them quiet; if they refuse to become silent, then throw dust on their faces. Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that I said to myself, "By Allah, you have neither spared yourself nor have you obeyed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that it was said to her that Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates in a marfu’ form that the deceased is punished in the grave because of the weeping of the living. She said that Abu Abdur Rahman assumes that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The family of the deceased are weeping over him, and he is being punished because of his own sins.

It is narrated from Hazrat Al-Hajri that Hazrat Ibn Abi Awfa saw women weeping loudly over a deceased person and said that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade wailing.

Hazrat Jabr bin Atik narrates from his uncle that I attended the funeral of an Ansari man with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). His family members were weeping over him. I said, "Do you weep while the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is present among you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Leave them, let them weep. When it becomes obligatory upon him (when he is placed in the grave), they will not weep."
