Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that a Jewish woman came to me and gifted me some perfume. She said, "May Allah protect you from the punishment of the grave." Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that I thought about this in my heart. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came, I asked him, "O Messenger of Allah! Is there punishment in the grave?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Yes, indeed, they are punished in their graves, and animals hear it."

A narration similar to this has been reported from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her).

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Seek refuge with Allah from Hell, seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave, seek refuge with Allah from the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal), and seek refuge with Allah the Pure from the trials of this world and the Hereafter.

It is narrated from Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely this Ummah will be subjected to punishment in the graves. If you people did not stop burying the dead, I would pray to Allah the Exalted that He make you hear the punishment of the grave which I hear. Then he turned towards us and said: Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave. We submitted: We seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah that Hazrat Umm Habibah supplicated in this way: O Allah! Grant me benefit from my husband Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), my father Abu Sufyan, and my brother Muawiyah. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, you have asked Allah regarding those decrees which have already been decided, those days which have already been numbered, and that sustenance which has already been distributed. Nothing will happen before or after its appointed time by its own planning. If you had asked Allah for salvation from the punishment of Hell and salvation from the punishment of the grave, that would have been better and more virtuous.

Hazrat Muslim bin Abi Bakrah narrates from his father that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate after prayer as follows: O Allah! I seek refuge from disbelief, poverty, and the torment of the grave.

It is narrated from Hazrat Umar that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allah from cowardice, miserliness, the torment of the grave, and the trials of the heart.

Hazrat Bara’ narrates that we went with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to attend the funeral of an Ansari. When we reached the graveyard and the grave had not yet been prepared, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down, and we also sat around him in such a manner as if birds were sitting on our heads. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a stick in his blessed hand with which he was scratching the ground. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his blessed head and said: Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave.

Hazrat Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I narrate to you only what I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Allah! I seek refuge in You from incapacity, laziness, cowardice, miserliness, and the torment of the grave.

Hazrat Umm Mubashir narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me while I was near one of the walls of Banu Najjar, where there were graves of people from the time of ignorance (who had died during the age of ignorance). She says that then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left, and I heard him saying, "O people! Seek Allah's protection from the punishment of the grave." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Is there punishment in the grave?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Indeed, they are punished in their graves, and all animals hear it."

Hazrat Abu Ayyub narrates that one day the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a (screaming) sound at the time of sunset, so he said: This is the (screaming) sound of the Jews who are being punished in their graves.

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allah from cowardice, miserliness, the trials of life and death, and the torment of the grave.

Hazrat Umm Khalid bint Khalid narrates that I heard the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave.

It is narrated from Hazrat Asma that the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Revelation has been sent to me that surely you will be tested in your graves (you will be subjected to a trial), similar to or near the trial of the Antichrist (Dajjal). Then one of you will be brought and it will be said to him, "What do you know about this man?" The Prophet said, the believer will say, "He is Muhammad, peace be upon him, the Messenger of Allah, who came to us with clear proofs and guidance. We accepted him and followed him." It will be said to him, "Sleep in peace and safety; we knew that you were a believer in Allah." However, the hypocrite and the doubter will say, "I do not know who he is." Hazrat Asma says, he will say, "I do not know; I heard people saying something, so I said the same."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once passed by two graves and said: These two are being punished, and they are not being punished for something major; one of them used to spread gossip and the other did not protect himself from urine splashes.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Hasnah narrates that I and Hazrat Amr bin Al-Aas were sitting, when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived. He (peace and blessings be upon him) had with him a leather shield or something similar to it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) used it as a screen and sat down to relieve himself. We said, "O Messenger of Allah! You (peace and blessings be upon him) have relieved yourself in such a concealed manner as a woman does!" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and said: "Do you not know what happened to the man among the Children of Israel? If a drop of urine fell on any of their clothes, he would cut it off with scissors. They were forbidden from this, but they persisted, so they were punished in their graves."

It is narrated from Hazrat Mus'ab bin Sa'd that Hazrat Sa'd said to his son: O son! Seek refuge with Allah using those words with which the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek refuge, then he mentioned the punishment of the grave.

It is narrated from Hazrat Mus'ab bin Sa'd in a similar manner.
