Hadith 12201
١٢٢٠١ - حدثنا أبو الأحوص عن أبي إسحاق (١) قال: قال علي: لما مات أبو طالب أتيت النبي ﷺ فقلت: يا رسول (اللَّه) (٢) إن عمك الضال قد مات فقال (لي) (٣): "اذهب فواره ولا تحدثن شيئًا حتى تأتيني"، (قال) (٤): فانطلقت فواريته ثم رجعت إليه وعلي أثر التراب والغبار فدعا لي بدعوات ما يسرني أن لي بها ما على الأرض من شيء (٥).
Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when Abu Talib passed away, I went to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Your misguided uncle has died." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Go and cover him, and do not do anything until you come to me." I went and covered him, then returned, and there were signs of dust and dirt upon me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me some supplications which were more pleasing to me than acquiring the things of this world.
Hadith 12202
١٢٢٠٢ - [حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن أبي إسحاق عن ناجية عن علي عن النبي ﷺ بنحوه وقال: فأمرني بالغسل] (١) (٢).
It is narrated in the same way from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him, may Allah honor his face), and he states that I was commanded to perform ghusl (ritual bath).
Hadith 12203
١٢٢٠٣ - حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن حماد عن الشعبي قال: ماتت أم الحارث ابن أبي ربيعة وهي نصرانية فشهدها أصحاب محمد ﷺ (١).
Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that Umm al-Harith bint Abi Rabi'ah, who was a Christian woman, passed away, so the companions of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) attended her funeral.
Hadith 12204
١٢٢٠٤ - حدثنا شريك عن جابر عن عامر قال: ماتت أم الحارث وكانت نصرانية فشهدها أصحاب (رسول اللَّه) (١) ﷺ (٢).
The same is narrated from Hazrat Aamir.
Hadith 12205
١٢٢٠٥ - حدثنا عيسى بن يونس عن محمد بن (أبي) (١) إسماعيل عن عامر بن شقيق عن أبي وائل قال: ماتت أمي وهي نصرانية فأتيت عمر فذكرت ذلك له فقال: اركب (دابة) (٢) وسر أمامها (٣).
Hazrat Abu Wa'il says: My mother passed away, who was a Christian. I went to Hazrat Umar and informed him. He said: Mount your ride and walk silently in front of it.
Hadith 12206
١٢٢٠٦ - حدثنا جرير عن عطاء بن السائب قال: ماتت أم رجل من (ثقيف) (١) وهي نصرانية (فسأل) (٢) ابن (مغفل) (٣) فقال: إنّي أحب أن (أ) (٤) حضرها ولا أتبعها قال: اركب دابة وسر أمامها علوة فإنك إذا سرت أمامها فلست معها (٥).
Hazrat Ata bin As-Saib narrates that a man from Thaqif’s mother passed away, and she was a Christian. He asked Hazrat Ibn Ma’qil about this matter. He replied: “I personally prefer to be present at her funeral, but not to walk behind her bier. Then he said: Mount your ride and walk three to four hundred yards ahead of it, because when you walk ahead of it, you will not be counted as accompanying it.”
Hadith 12207
١٢٢٠٧ - حدثنا وكيع عن شريك عن عبد اللَّه بن شريك قال: سمعت (ابن) (١) عمر سئل عن الرجل المسلم يتبع أمه النصرانية تموت؟ قال: يتبعها (و) (٢) يمشي أمامها (٣).
Hazrat Abdullah bin Sharik narrates that I heard from Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that a person asked whether he could attend the funeral of his Christian mother who had passed away. He replied: Go with her, but walk ahead of her funeral procession.
Hadith 12208
١٢٢٠٨ - حدثنا وكيع عن إسرائيل عن ضرار بن مرة عن سعيد بن جبير قال: مات رجل نصراني وله ابن مسلم فلم يتبعه فقال ابن عباس: كان ينبغي له أن يتبعه ويدفنه ويستغفر له في حياته (١).
Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair narrates that a Christian passed away and he had a Muslim son who did not participate in his funeral. Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: It would have been appropriate for him to go with his father's funeral, bury him, and pray for his forgiveness during his (the father's) lifetime.
Hadith 12209
١٢٢٠٩ - حدثنا علي بن مسهر عن الأجلح عن الشعبي قال: لما مات أبو طالب (جاء) (١) (علي) (٢) إلى النبي ﷺ فقال: إن عمك الشيخ الكافر قد مات فما ترى فيه؟ قال: "أرى أن تغسله (وتنحيه) " (٣)، وأمره بالغسل (٤).
Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that when Abu Talib passed away, Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him, may Allah honor his face) came to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "Your disbelieving uncle has died. What is your opinion regarding him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give him a bath and bury him," and later instructed them to perform the washing.
Hadith 12210
١٢٢١٠ - حدثنا ابن فضيل عن ضرار بن مرة عن سعيد بن جبير قال: مات رجل نصراني (فوكله) (١) ابنه إلى أهل دينه، فذكر ذلك لابن عباس فقال: ما كان عليه لو مشى معه (وأجنه) (٢) (واستغفر) (٣) له ما كان حيًا، ثم تلا: ﴿وَمَا كَانَ اسْتِغْفَارُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لِأَبِيهِ﴾ (الآية) (٤) (٥).
Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair narrates that when a Christian man passed away, his son handed him over to the people of his own religion. When this was mentioned to Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), he said: There would have been no harm if he had gone with him, buried him, and prayed for his forgiveness during his lifetime. Then he recited this verse: { وَمَا کَانَ اسْتِغْفَارُ إبْرَاہِیمَ لأَبِیہِ }.
