Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: When you lower your dead into the graves, recite this supplication: BISMILLAHI WA ‘ALA SUNNATI RASULILLAHI SALLALLAHU ‘ALAYHI WA SALLAM

A narration similar to this has been reported from Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would lower the deceased into the grave, he would say: In the name of Allah, and with Allah, and upon the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah.

Hazrat Abu Mudrik Ashja'i narrates that when Hazrat Umar would lower the deceased into the grave, he would say, and Hazrat Abu Al-Ahwas narrates that when he would level the soil over him, he would say: "In the name of Allah, to You (O Allah) are entrusted his wealth, family, clan, and great sin, so forgive him." With the name of Allah, O Allah, his wealth, family, clan, and sin are entrusted to You. Forgive him.

Hazrat Khaythamah narrates that when the Companions would lower the deceased into the grave, they preferred to say: "In the name of Allah, and in the way of Allah, and upon the religion of the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, protect him from the punishment of the grave, and the punishment of the Fire, and from the evil of Satan." With the name of Allah, in the way of Allah, upon the religion of Allah's Messenger, O Allah, safeguard him from the torment of the grave, the torment of the Fire, and from the evil of Satan.

Whenever Hazrat Mujahid would lower the deceased into the grave, he would say: In the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. O Allah, expand his grave for him, illuminate it for him, join him with his Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and be pleased with him, not angry. With the name of Allah and in the way of Allah, O Allah, make his grave spacious, make his grave bright, unite him with his Prophet (peace be upon him), be pleased with him and do not be displeased.

Ibrahim al-Taymi says that when you lower the deceased into the grave, say: Bismillah, wa ila Allah, wa ‘ala sunnati Rasoolillah sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. "With the name of Allah, and to Allah, and upon the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him."

Ibrahim says that when you lower the deceased into the grave, say: BISMILLAH, WA ‘ALA MILLATI RASULILLAH SALLALLAHU ‘ALAYHI WA SALLAM. "With the name of Allah, and upon the religion of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him."

Hazrat Qatadah narrates that when Hazrat Anas buried his son, he said (this supplication): "Separate the earth from both his sides, open the gates of the heavens for his soul, and grant him a home better than his home." "O Allah! Separate the earth from both his sides, open the gates of the heavens for his soul, and grant him a home better than his home."

Hazrat Alaa bin Musayyib narrates from his father that when the deceased is lowered into the grave, do not say Bismillah, rather recite this: "In the way of Allah and upon the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), upon the religion of Ibrahim, who was an upright Muslim and was not among the polytheists. O Allah! Grant him strength with the firm word in the Hereafter. O Allah! Grant him more goodness than before. O Allah! Do not deprive us of his reward and do not put us to trial after him." And he says that this verse of the Holy Qur'an { یُثَبِّتُ اللّٰہُ الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا بِالْقَوْلِ الثَّابِتِ فِی الْحَیٰوۃِ الدُّنْیَا وَ فِی الْاٰخِرَۃِ } was revealed regarding the occupant of the grave.

Ibn Aun reports: I asked Muhammad, "When I lower the deceased into the grave, what should I say?" He replied, "Nothing."

Hazrat Asim bin Hamzah narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him, may Allah honor his face) used to say at the time of sleeping and when lowering the deceased into the grave: BISMILLAHI WA FEE SABILILLAH, WA ‘ALA MILLATI RASOOLILLAHI SALLALLAHU ‘ALAYHI WA SALLAM. "With the name of Allah, in the way of Allah, and upon the religion of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him."
