Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Anis bin Abi Yahya narrates from his father that I saw Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and another person sit down before the funeral bier was placed down.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Amr states that Hazrat Qasim and Hazrat Salim both used to walk in front of the funeral procession and would sit down before the bier was placed down.

Hazrat Saeed says that I saw Hasan sit down before the funeral was placed on the grave.

Hazrat Abu Ja'far and Hazrat 'Amir say that there is no harm in sitting before the bier (funeral) is placed down.

Hazrat Bara narrates that we went with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to the funeral of an Ansari man. When we reached the grave and the niche had not yet been made, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down, and we also sat around him in such a manner as if birds were sitting on our heads.

Hazrat Muraq Al-Ajli says that you are not just in two matters, but you will find their like; according to Abdullah, whichever of them is easier. So when the funeral (is lifted onto shoulders), you should sit down.

Hazrat Saeed Al-Maqburi narrates from his father that I saw Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Marwan walking in front of a funeral, then both of them sat down. Hazrat Abu Saeed Al-Khudri arrived and said: O Amir, stand up. He (Abu Hurairah) knows that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would go with a funeral, he would not sit down until the funeral was placed down.
