Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that Hazrat Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) recited five takbeers in the funeral prayer of a person.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila narrates that Hazrat Zaid used to recite four takbirs over our funerals, then once he recited five takbirs over a funeral. We inquired about this, so he said that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite takbirs in this manner.

Hazrat Zir narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) recited five takbeers in the funeral prayer of a man from Baladan.

Hazrat Alqamah bin Qais narrates that when I returned from Syria, I said to Hazrat Abdullah: I saw Hazrat Mu’adh bin Jabal and his companions in Syria; they recite five takbeers in the funeral prayer. Please fix a number for us so that we may follow it. He lowered his head and remained silent for a while, then said: Recite as many takbeers as your imam recites; there is no fixed number.

The servant of Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited five takbirs at a funeral. All the narrators except Waki’ have also added that then he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do the same.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) recited five takbirs over a funeral.

Hazrat Ayyub bin Nu'man narrates that I offered the funeral prayer behind Hazrat Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him), and he recited five takbeers in it.

Hazrat Abd Khair narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him, may Allah honor his face) used to recite six takbirs in the funeral prayer of the companions of Badr, five takbirs in the funeral prayers of other companions, and four takbirs in the funeral prayers of common people.
