Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Awf bin Malik Ashja'i narrates that I heard the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting this supplication over a deceased person: Hazrat Awf bin Malik says that I felt great longing that if only I were in his place (and these supplications would have been for me).

Hazrat Abu Ibrahim Ansari narrates from his father that I heard the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting this while offering prayer over a deceased person: O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our males and our females, our young and our old.

Hazrat Usman bin Shamas narrates that we were sitting with Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) when Marwan passed by him. He said to him: "A part of your narration which is transmitted from the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." Then he went away and after some time returned. We asked, "Did that incident happen with him?" He replied, "What did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recite in the funeral prayer?" He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recite this (supplication): 'You guided her to Islam and You took her soul. You know her secret and her open (deeds). We have come to You as intercessors, so forgive her.'"

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Salamah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to recite this in the funeral prayer: O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our males and our females, those present and those absent, our young and our old. O Allah, whomever You keep alive from among us, keep him alive upon Islam, and whomever You cause to die from among us, cause him to die upon faith.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Malik that when Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq led the funeral prayer, he would recite this supplication:

Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib narrates that Hazrat Umar used to recite this supplication in the funeral prayer: "O Allah, (if it was evening) Your servant has reached the evening, (if it was morning) Your servant has reached the morning, he has separated himself from the world and left it for its people, he has become free of need from it and has become needy towards You. He used to bear witness that there is no god but You, and that Muhammad is Your servant and Messenger, so forgive him his sins."

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abdur Rahman Abzi narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to recite this supplication in the funeral prayer: "O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, unite our hearts, reconcile our mutual affairs, and make our hearts like the hearts of our best ones. O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, have mercy on him. O Allah, return him to a state better than that in which he was. O Allah, Your pardon."

Hazrat Khalid says that I was present at the funeral of Ghaneem. One of them informed me that he heard Hazrat Abu Musa; he recited the takbeer in the funeral prayer and then recited this supplication: "O Allah, forgive him as he sought Your forgiveness, and grant him what he asked of You, and increase him from Your bounty."

Hazrat Abu Salamah narrates that when Hazrat Abdullah bin Salam performed the funeral prayer, he would recite this supplication: O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our young and our old, our males and our females, those present among us and those absent. O Allah, whomever You cause to die from among us, cause him to die upon faith, and whomever You keep alive from among us, keep him alive upon Islam.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Ibn Ghailan narrate that Hazrat Abu Darda used to recite this supplication in the funeral prayer: O Allah, forgive our living and our deceased among the Muslims. O Allah, forgive the Muslim men and women, and the believing men and women, and reconcile their mutual affairs, and unite their hearts, and make their hearts upon the hearts of their best ones. O Allah, forgive so-and-so son of so-and-so his sins, and join him with his Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). O Allah, raise his rank among the guided, and appoint his successor among those left behind, and place his record in Illiyyin, and forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward, and do not misguide us after him.

Hazrat Abu Sadiq Al-Naji narrates that I asked Hazrat Abu Saeed about the funeral prayer. He replied: We pray like this: O Allah! You are our Lord and his Lord. You created him, provided for him, gave him life, and sufficed him. So forgive us and him, and do not deprive us of his reward, and do not misguide us after him.

Hazrat Nafi’ reports that Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) when performing the funeral prayer, used to recite this supplication: “O Allah, bless him, send Your mercy upon him, forgive him, and admit him to the reservoir of Your Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).” The narrator says that he (Ibn Umar) stood for a long time and recited many supplications, but I could not understand anything except this.

Yunus reports that I asked Hazrat Mujahid, "Which supplication should be recited in the funeral prayer?" He replied, "We recite this: O Allah, You created him, and You guided him to Islam, and You took his soul, and You know best his secret and his open deeds. We have come to intercede for him, so forgive him."

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abu Auf narrates that Hazrat Sharjeel bin Simt's funeral was attended by Hazrat Ibn Lahi Al-Hawzani, and Hazrat Habib bin Muslimah Al-Fihri was brought forward to lead the prayer. He turned towards us in such a way as a tall person turns with his height, then said: Pray well for your brother, but the supplication you make for him should be like this: "O Allah, forgive this upright, Muslim soul, and make him among those who repented and followed Your path, and protect him from the punishment of Hellfire, and seek Allah's help against your enemy."
